I like the idea. I don't know that I personally would use it very often but the idea of being able to hop on a train to go between NO and BR would be great.

If that were the case I could fly into and stay in NO and catch the train to BR for LSU games.

But you also have to consider demand... Are looking at a $15-20 fare?

I rode from Hammond to NOLA via Amtrak and a girl said she was traveling for less than $20. She said it helps to have commuter cards and look for discounts. Apparently it is easy to travel for cheap still.

I bought the night before and paid about 60.

Are these bullet street cars?

Pay attention and you won't get hit. Can't be worse than St Charles.

No one will use it.

Then next thing you know, we will have to raise taxes for subsidies so the people who can't afford $15-$20 a ride can use it because they have a right to public transit.

my friend did this concept for a terminal in BR. Not a serious proposal, just something he did during his free time. He's an architecture grad, as am I.

I think they have already had a few studies.

You know, you can never study a topic too hard. May as well study it a little more

Your friend is talented, better take that crap where it will get utilized, like out west or in Colorado or something

I'm paying for trains or lanes. This looks to benefit me more. I would take it often.

I think a lot of it depends on where the thing stops in each place. If I want to take the train from New Orleans and end up in the Shenandoah area of Baton Rouge, how far will someone have to drive to come pick me up from the station to bring me there? Or how far is my cab/uber ride?

If it's just going to go from downtown NOLA to downtown BR, or to LSU; then yeah I don't think many people will use it. Especially during the week. It might get some action on weekends.

This. It would be awesome for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, flights out of MSY, Saints games, Pelicans games, bowl games, Voodoo Fest, French Quarter Fest, concerts, bachelor parties, visiting friends and family, work, nights on the town, shopping, ect.

I don't get why everyone gets a hard-on for having a stupid train running between BR and NOLA. Literally they could build a third lane on the interstate and completely solve any problems about commuting.

Airport parking is probably more expensive than a train ride. Parking in NOLA is probably more expensive than a train ride. The bigger question is definitely who's going to take the train back to Baton Rouge other than Baton Rougeans returning home? Downtown business meetings and LSU sports only goes so far. For this to be successful that corridor would really have to grow. Maybe if they built that big airport in between BR and NOLA they're always talking about it would work out. Then you get traffic from both cities using it regularly, even if it's only for half the line.

Regarding the horror of mass transit for southerners, it's all about being useful. Does the proposed commuter train really seem less dangerous or filled with fewer unwashed masses than the French Quarter you're taking the train to?

as long as some of the money goes toward double tracking, the new bridge across the Bonnet Carre should without a doubt be double tracked...

Good for them.

Traffic expands to fill available lanes. That's not seriously in dispute.

HOV/Toll lanes are premium products. They do nothing for people who do not utilize them. They do nothing if everyone utilizes them.

And a half a billion (if we're lucky) dollar train that was supposed to cost "only" a quarter billion - and then we'll have to subsidize the operation for years and years.

The only folks who will ride it regularly will be those who get free/subsidized tickets. And it will be deemed unsafe to use for those who can/would afford to pay full price.

Rinse, repeat.

It stops in the CBD, Nola Airport, Gonzales, MidCity BR, and maybe LaPlace. From the CBD, one can take the streetcar all over (plus there's the added St. Claude line coming). Once in BR, one will be able to take the streetcar downtown, to Independence Park, and to LSU. There will also be bus lines to take one anywhere in the city running past the bus station there.

There is a whole area between BR and NOLA. There will be plenty of opportunity to fill the seats.

The limitation I see comes to frequency. The once a day crap (one round trip) is the hardest thing to overcome.
