I would use it regularly and love it. I don't know how good of an idea it is for the public good though. That's a pretty damn big investment.

That's be pretty sweet if it did work with the old entergy building. That location is prime for some redevelopment.

For BR a loop or downtown bypass is still way more necessary. It is insane that all interstate traffic goes right thru the city.

I went to the meetings they held regarding turning a big portion of that property into mixed use developments. A lot of it was snake oil, but some portions seemed pretty doable.

As for a train, if it was reliable and got me to New Orleans proper inside of 2 hours, I'd take it regularly.
Heck, if it had a stop in Gonzales that got me there in 45 minutes or less I'd take that at least twice a month.

Anchors for development

Beyond the people are the train stations themselves. The plan touts them as anchors for development. But it will be up to each local government whether to build a shining grand central station or a river shack junction.

In Gonzales, for example, elected leaders appear to be leaning toward the former. Its city council recently bought four acres along the freight tracks from a local Catholic church, including a parking lot and a failed technical school.

The site is little more than a mile from the Ascension Parish government center and a few blocks from the city's old core, a hardscrabble strip along North Burnside Avenue that Mayor Barney Arceneaux calls ripe for redevelopment.

He also expressed confidence in the rail authority's ability to get the plan off the ground.

"I really do feel good about it," Arceneaux said. "I know the mayors of New Orleans and Baton Rouge are behind it, and the people I know that are on that (rail authority) board right now, I think they've got things going in the right direction."

How long would the ride take from NOLA to BR?

And what happens when you get off at the station in BR and have no car? Cities that have this sort of thing in place already have the infrastructure for public transit within the city so once you get there you aren't looking for a cab

Literally they could build a third lane on the interstate and completely solve any problems about commuting.

I'm no fan of this train boondoggle, but this isn't true, either. Traffic always expands to fill available lanes.

It's counter-intuitive, but it is also true. What happens is - like water - traffic takes the route of least resistance - so your lower volume roads will get less traffic and the extra lane will fill up. Also, they've found that induced demand means there is a perfect relationship of increased miles of travel lanes to increased driving by the local population.

I've seen Gonzales's plans for Burnside and they're pretty legit. Basically, from Airline to 30 is going to be "gentrified" including at least one strip of bars and restaurants. Then, on the other side of 30, from there to the interstate is going to be the Edenborne development including mixed use stuff, the new community college annex, and subdivisions. Then from I10-22 is going to be solid businesses and subdivisions thanks to the new River Ranch development called Conway Plantation.

Exciting things are happening in Gonzales if this train idea goes through.

$44 from Bham to NOLA on AMTRAK. I wish there was a high speed rail from DC to Houston, hitting the major stops in the SE.

Government Street will have a streetcar line stretching from the River Center to Independence Park, running right past the train station. This will link up to the Nicholson Street Car that will run from downtown (potentially as far north as the Capital) down to Alex Box (or potentially as far south as Lee/Brightside).

Plus, just about every bus line in the city goes right by there regardless.

I think this is a great idea. That being said, it will be interesting to see how it affects traffic when it is blocking off intersections for a few minutes across town. (From Government, mainly out to College and Essen and out to Highland Road). It may not be enough to cause any real issues because the train probably wont be that long, but I thought normally these commuter trains were separate from car/bus traffic.

How is this going to happen? The plan to change Government to three lanes has no room for this whatsoever. Maybe down Florida instead...

Middle lane is a turn lane AND has a streetcar for extra chaos

How is that chaotic?

So like, NOLA to BR is almost 5 times shorter of a distance.

But you also have to consider demand... Are we looking at a $15-20 fare?

I think it's funny how most of you only think people would use this for LSU games or the airports.

Back when the LA Swift was running people used it more to access employment between the two cities than recreation.
