I think he could have bought a nice used camper for about 1/2 that price.
If someone wanted a more permanent, safer, low cost solution, shipping container houses are the answer.

If a person can cut, weld, and do some carpentry, these can be very easy.

If alone in the middle of a big city, sure.

They are narrower than the houses on trailers and it's hard to get vertical space out of them.

I've seen it done, but I'm not handy enough to do it and to make it livable would probably cost a lot of money.

A beat up container will run you at least $3K so to stack a few together to get any space would cost you more than buying framing lumber to build something similar in size. You still have to finish out the inside too unless you like rusted walls with no insulation so that would be a wash.

I don't see how it could be cheaper.

I've wanted this dwelling made by MEKA called the Sol 480. It's made from 3 recycled shipping containers. I don't need a whole lot of space so its more than enough for me right now.

That's where the cutting and welding comes in, considering how cheap these are, and how easy they are to put together.

The only limitations with these, are a person's imagination and abilities. You can buy 2 of the 40 footers in my area for less than 5 grand,in almost new condition.
These things are incredibly strong and safe, once anchored properly.

I could frame out the same space with materials for cheaper than the containers cost.

Hell yea. I actually live in a tiny apt now. Downsized big time when I moved and I love it. More space = more shite you don't need.

I know a couple in their late 20's who quit their jobs in the corporate world and now live in a tiny house in New Mexico. One is a barista at a local coffe place and the other one does work from home stuff. The tiny house is completely paid for and their bills are absurdly low. They don't buy useless stuff to fill a big house. They travel all the time now and i've got to say they appear extremely happy and don't have any stress. It does look appealing to me. I could consider it, I guess, as long as no kids.

Alright I'll post a few older photos.

And the sweet meadow leading back to the pond. Excited to spruce this up a bit this year

Few things:
-My home is no longer purple. Color turned out nothing like it was supposed to
-I started painting the outside of the home and hated it, so I'm waiting till spring to strip it and restain it

Yes,maybe you could, but you would have a lot more labor involved, and end up with something that is nowhere near as strong and safe. They're built to withstand hurricanes, getting dropped, stacked, and loaded with tons of weight on the floors.
Also, these can be disassembled and moved easily.

Anymore companies around Louisiana that do homes like these? I'm seriously contemplating something like this. Thanks.

Have you ever framed anything up? Something this size is not as labor intensive as you think and working with wood is a hell of a lot easier than metal work. It would be a wash at the very least and I wouldn't need any large machinery to frame a house vs moving around containers. Cutting and framing wood is a hell of a lot faster than torching, grinding, and welding.

I don't need something to withstand an atomic bomb but a frame house, if built to code with the proper strapping, is plenty strong enough.

Not once you weld them together and finish the inside. Also, that goes back to needing equipment to move them. The tiny houses on trailers can be moved with a 1/2 ton truck.

I have looked at both numerous times and I am a contractor. Just trust me when I say there are no real advantages to the containers vs framing up what you want. The only slight advantage is that you could possibly be dried in faster since the containers come already complete but even that would be offset by using SIPs. Also, framing up 400 sq ft could be accomplished in a few days by someone that knows what they are doing.

I'm always impressed when I see those shows on tiny homes. They all look really cool and I could see why many would like it.

But I couldn't do it. I don't need a ridiculous amount of space...but more than those homes
