“It’s a deliberate attempt to do it over a period of time, properly resourced, with professional development and supplies and instructional materials to make it happen,” Brady said, adding that to try and make it all happen simultaneously in all grade levels “would just be too much.”
DoDEA is transitioning to what it calls College and Career Ready standards, which are based in large part on the Common Core standards adopted by 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Is this good or bad for kids? Can anyone really break down Common Core for me without political bias? TIA

DoD is doing the right thing.

Common Core is just a set of standards each student should meet by a certain point in their school careers to advance.

Common Core does NOT set a curriculum.

The more I think about it, the less I care about Common Core. It's just teaching a different way to the same solution as far as I can tell. Sure it looks excessive to me now, but so does a lot of the grade school math work I did back in the day.

How does it affect other subjects? I feel like math problems are the only examples ever given.

My wife just started teaching a year ago and before she did, we thought Common Core was the reason our kids were being taught these ridiculous methods in elementary school. Turns out, as a teacher, Common Core just tells you which standards to teach, not how to teach them.

Bureaucratic Nonsense, political correctness run amok, incompetent adminstrations, school governing bodies elected from the masses, and non-educators consulting on how educators teach are the biggest problems in schools.

Originally it was a group of Republican Governors, including Jindal, who came up with the idea of all states having the same set of standards instead of each state having its own set.

They then found out their constituents couldn't grasp the concept and are afraid of change, so the governors crawfished and blamed liberals and govt over reach for Common Core, even though it is a good idea.

.

Bingo!!
Common Core is a set of standards. Not math workbooks. Not homework. And not your kids teachers teaching method. Implantation of common core standards is at the local level. If a teacher is ineffective at teaching common core it isn't necessarily common cores fault.
The test may be a different story, but the essence of common core is needed at the federal level to be able to judge the education of American students at the world level and amongst ourselves.

Whoever set them in East Baton Rouge has changed them every year since the institution of Common Core, which has hindered any potential progress. Was told one curriculum had the phrase New York and people were so bent out of shape that Louisiana educators were teaching something they thought was created in New York.

Leap tests in la are state policy. Common core is federal and ensures everyone in the country takes the same test.
