Aren't these school state funded? How can the feds decide to implement a new teaching/testing strategy

Federal is wrong phrase. National is better.

Again, Republicans came up with the idea that each state having its own standards was stupid and we should all have the same standards, so that kids in Louisiana and Minnesota could move and still be at same level of schooling within each state.

When they cowered to the angry masses, the Feds took over, thereby giving the governors a scapegoat for an idea that is really very good.

Not sure what you mean by "currently" but in common core there is one set of minimum standards.

There's nothing wrong with Common Core.

It only covers English and Math. That's it.

It treats math the way it's supposed to be treated, like a logic. Math is more than memorization. It's critical thinking. That's why you have children who do well in arithmetic and struggle in Algebra. They are looking at it wrong.

Most teachers oppose it because it shows how inadequate they are in teaching the subject

No. And this is the problem. Kids in LA have been held to lower standards for a long time. CC is an eye opener. We have a long way to go.

NCLB has each state taking their own standardized testing, but we are all supposed to teach to the same federal standards.

DoD is doing the right thing.

Common Core is just a set of standards each student should meet by a certain point in their school careers to advance.

Common Core does NOT set a curriculum

YES YES YES.

It's unbelievable how many people who oppose it don't know this.

True.

The prob with CC is when you introduce it anywhere besides kinder.

Overall, it is a step towards a better education. It is an "average" though...some states are now teaching down. That makes me feel even worse about the la school system.

The problem IMO is holding everyone in this country to exact same rigid standards makes the standards overly vague and often watered down. Even state standards can often be confusing and leave out many important things while inuding silly things.

Doing it on a national level just makes it worse IMO

I don't think common core is some great thing, but there's nothing especially nefarious or counterproductive about it either. I love how the people complaining about it all hail from the shittiest school districts in the country.

Typical.

As a teacher in Mississippi, this could not be further from the truth. Our state subject area tests in Biology 1, Algebra 1, English 2, and U.S. History are as rigorous as any in the nation ( while most states only have an "exit" exam)

Sorry. It's a fact according to a US census on education...

Our scores may be lower than most states due in large part to the socioeconomic status of our state but our standards are not.

I'll bite. Let's see some data on exactly what it is your trying sell. Are we talking pre common core or currently? Has Mississippi adapted to it yet?

We are one of them states that has adopted common core. However, we like most states, have done away with the PARCC testing system after one year and have gone to a test called Q-STAR in which teachers have had no training on at all. Teachers were confused with what to teach on the PARCC assessment and have no idea what this one will look like. Very confusing and frustrating.
