Colorado has now generated more than $1 billion in total state revenue from the legal marijuana industry, another milestone for the state that legalized cannabis in 2014.

Colorado already has posted some big numbers: More than $6 billion in total sales of cannabis since the birth of the new industry — over $6.5 billion at the end of May, according to just-released monthly data from the state. And the state’s revenue from adult-use marijuana sales has accelerated.

I agree. We already have the homeless so we may as well get the revenue. Downtown Denver did have near as many bums before legalization that I could tell.

I hate it when people use tax revenue generation as a selling point

Again, this is misleading.

People are buying marijuana, but they are doing so by switching their spending habits to mj from other products.

Every dollar spent on mj is a dollar not spent elsewhere, so the billion dollars in revenue doesn’t represent an actual gain in a billion dollars for the state, it just means the state lost a billion dollars in sales tax revenue in other industries which is now being spent in mj shops.

We call this substitution effect in economics

Well, also, a huge reason they're generating this kind of money is because it's illegal in a ton of other states

Mississippi could solve it’s infrastructure problems by bringing the lottery to the state and legalizing marijuana but we would never do that.

And we could raise teacher pay but no one wants easy solutions to hard problems

Or these people could have been buying weed illegally, therein giving Colorado no tax revenue.

25% > 0%

Wouldn't it still be a gain for Colorado? Spending money on something that is taxed higher vs taxed lower means they still come out ahead.
