Geographically speaking Baton Rouge should have grown north because the terrain is better. Because of socioeconomics that's not what happened.

Due to population changes, the Houma-Thibodaux MSA was supposed to change to Micro MSA, I guess they changed their minds.

With loosing the North Shore, I'm not sure NO will even be a top 50 market even though nothing really changes. What's the primary city in that new MSA Slidell?

This is strictly based on 2020 census commuting patterns. Literally all it is based on. Northshore is still a commuting parish but during COVID commuting was limited. I don’t think this is really accurate and it will be added to NOLA metro again with next census. It used to be partly based on cultural, economic ties etc but they changed that and it’s only based on commuting.

This makes sense, and probably why BR, NOLA, and the Northshore won’t be one large MSA.

What are the practical implications of these reassignments?

Also, you have some companies that are moving offices to Covington and Mandeville instead of being in New Orleans or Metairie.

Bayou bonfouca and bayou liberty. Both have some gorgeous locations.

Most people only know the interstate through Slidell but there’s a lot more to it. I don’t generally give a crap if people want to poop on Slidell. I like it for what it offers me.

In 25 minutes, I can be out into some of the best fishing in the state.

There's a big arse swamp between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that is a major hindrance to this otherwise it might have already happened.
When the legislature is in session there is arguably a swamp in BR.

Not much, other than it slightly alters statistics used for things like federal programs and business attraction.

The Covington, Mandeville, Slidell MSA will probably be one of the more demographically attractive MSAs in the state for outside businesses looking in (high income, highly educated, relatively low crime).

New Orleans losing the Northshore's data probably doesn't help their statistical appearance any.

Lafayette may indeed show some improved data by losing Iberia Parish, although it will cost them an overall population decline (Iberia Parish has @70,000 people). They'd go from a five-parish area to a four-parish area (Lafayette, St. Martin, Acadia, Vermilion).

Lake Charles would get a nice little population boost from Jeff Davis Parish (+30,000) and adds a third parish instead of being just two (Calcasieu, Cameron).
