Not true. Sometimes people come by great deals on low mileage vehicles. This is ESPECIALLY true with untimely deaths, older people having vehicles that are several years old but hardly used, etc.

In each of my caveats.

You can get a 2015 Carrera S nicely equipped with around 7,000 miles for around $85k now...original MSRP runs around $135k...

so it will be under warranty for the full 48 months. (48 months or 50,000k miles)
4) it's expensive as hell to maintain (e.g. ~$1400-$1600 for new tires). Can I afford to maintain it without a warranty? Yes, but why would I buy used when the difference could potentially be less than the maintenance costs?

It's cheaper to maintain a car than to buy a new one. If you can really afford a brand new AMG, you can easily maintain an older car.

Also, if you are only keeping the car for the warranty period, why not just lease it?

Yeah, that's something I've considered with different models - the Carrera being one of them. It's the maintenance that always gets me. I've gotten used to not having to worry about maintenance with my current car. I know you're a car guy (and have some nice cars), so you know what simple maintenance can run.

I may end up doing something like that for my next car though if I find something that I really want and it runs too much new (like the AMG GTS or Carrera S)

It's really amazing for a board full of ballers that everyone on the OT drives beaters for 300,000 miles

Just get a used on that's only about 5 years old

Who the hell wants a 5 year old vehicle? I drive about 35,000 miles per year. I get a new car every 3-4 years. I'm not spending my time in a 5 year old car. I find with the rebates and deals that you can find on a new car it never makes sense for me to buy used(assuming your trying to buy a low mileage used car that's one or two years old)

Maintenance on a Carrera is not too different from performance BMW and Audi models--I've had a few of them. It will still be covered undear Porsche warranty to 4 year/50kand you can buy it out to 6year/100k if you choose (about $4500 to do so).

Also--I have had the least maintenance problems with my CarreraS...no turbos or supercharges to deal with and it is stupid fast.

...and I drive mine over 40,000/year!

you got it perfectly backwards...the more rare, the more it depreciates...they don't make many for a reason, they can't sell many.

if you want the new car, go for it, but don't pretend it's not bad economics

Depends on condition, but they have been steadily rising the last few years as there is a desire for the "last of the air cooled" 911's. The same will happen for the 2012-2016 991 body--the last of the naturally aspirated.

2017 saw the introduction of the 991.2 body and all motors are now turbocharged.

Don't listen to the OT. If you want new and can afford it, get new.

If I decide to keep it longer than 4 years then I'll end up paying maintenance costs, which I'm fine with. The only real option for buying used is to buy (at most) 1 year used. The difference in price won't be significant, especially considering how particular I am about the options that I want.

It's something I've considered. I've never leased before but I get the feeling that it might be smarter considering I won't be putting many miles on it. And if I still want it after the lease period (which is usually 3 years) I can just buy it.

I have no idea if they'll have good lease options. I'll have to look into it.

If you plan on keeping it for only 4 years why not just lease it and make it 3 years
