It seems that most everyone in the OT prefers to buy used and considers it a waste to buy new.

In what instances do those here consider it better to buy new??

I'm about to buy a new car (in the next few months) and here are some of the reasons it didn't make sense to me to buy used:

1) the model is new (design, engine) in 2017. There isn't a comparable used model
2) it's kind of a rare car so it's not going to depreciate much unless it has mechanical issues within its first couple of years
3) I plan to keep the car for at least 4 years. I have a short commute (6-7 minutes) so I don't anticipate putting more than 12.5k miles on it per year so it will be under warranty for the full 48 months. (48 months or 50,000k miles)
4) it's expensive as hell to maintain (e.g. ~$1400-$1600 for new tires). Can I afford to maintain it without a warranty? Yes, but why would I buy used when the difference could potentially be less than the maintenance costs?

You rotten pecker.

Almost any 2017 car will be available next year as a used car.

People die, get bored, need money, etc.

You have already made up your impatient mind to buy new.

Why ask a question when you've already decided?

Just went through the process. There's no flat answer for the process. Some brands are worth it to go new and others really arent

I'd like to get something soon because my warranty just ran out on my current car. I'd also just prefer to do something sooner than later. I've got the itch

Also, I'd lose a year on the warranty.

Just get a used on that's only about 5 years old and pay cash and half the price you would a new.

Invest the difference.

The only reason to buy used is if they're discontinuing features you really value.

The only reason to buy new is if what you want isn't available on the used market.

I have one of each.

Each situation is different, but the buy used crowd def likes to use info from 20 years ago as a talking point.

Buying a used truck in the last five years is just dumb unless you are looking at something over five years with a lot of miles and you know how to fix things

You do not sound like a smart buyer. Being in a hurry and having an itch are ingredients for overpaying.

Plus it sounds like you think a year of warranty is calendar year instead of 12 months from purchase.
