There are a ton of buildings on Florida boulevard between N. Little John and Denham Springs that need to be demolished.

One place that comes to mind is that shite-arse strip across from Radio Bar next to Catholic, even though it isn't abandoned. CHS has been systematically buying up houses that back up to their campus over the last few years, and I'm pretty sure this strip will be next or is in the works. Mid-City has had a major revival and this strip is holding a lot of it back IMHO.

I have never understood why people make a big deal about this place. The neighborhood isn't even that bad of an area, it's just an old motel. It's like people have formed this stigma about it being some crime infested crack den that is risky to even drive near.

I live right around the corner. When the construction is done, it's gonna be a really nice area, except the fricking motel.

If it was in a bad area, noone would care if it was still erect. The problem is, there are brand new homes and decent area not too far away. Santa Maria at Boone and Worthington Estates are nice neighborhoods.

Same here, my grandma's house was right around the corner. We'd go see movies and buy comic books at the bookstore in the same shopping center.

Ha! Ol' Westmoreland Shopping Center. I've always wondered how that placed stayed afloat. Even when I was at CHS in the mid-90s, it seemed to be struggling.

I wouldn't say so. They tore down that huge, old furniture store across the parking lot years ago, and nothing's taken its place yet. What's been holding up the revival of Mid-City is the outdated Unified Development Code. However, they are currently in the process of updating it. As it stands now, redevelopment in accordance with the UDC is very hard, particularly in old, highly urbanized areas. It'll be a while before it's published, though.

Also the Jetson Juvie prison. I understand it's abandoned now. Could probably put something cool there.

That whole area between Airline and Denham along Florida is struggling more than it should. Those service roads are like a barrier to potential retail traffic on Florida (which stays pretty busy), and it's way over developed for the local residential market.

I think with a better format for Florida blvd, that whole area would improve.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to get that technical.

I just think it's an eyesore.

I hear ya. I just know of several small businesses that could not go through with their plans in that area because of the UDC and some antiquated zoning regulations that were cost-prohibitive for them to pursue.

While I do agree that the service roads are not ideal, it's better than having 8,000 driveways connecting to the highway (see Siegen Ln). There could be some minor modifications to the access points that would make it a lot more navigable (for example, prohibit access to major intersections & put right-in/right-out access points at regular intervals).

Anyway, that whole area you're talking about is highly inhabited with Asians and Mexicans, and many of the businesses along that corridor cater directly to them. There are actually some awesome little ethnic markets in there if you know where to look. Regardless, I think it's just that the property values of the homes in the area have decreased, so there aren't any big money-spenders living nearby to create the demand for new businesses.

Totally agree. I would actually say all of Florida Blvd is struggling.

We could save it if we put a TV camera in it, so there's that.
