It thought they were meant to be supplemental and that TP was still needed initially.
Most people still use a little bit of toilet paper, but only to dry at the end and not "initially". My personal MO is to give a little squirt at the start both to help prevent shite from sticking and to "prime the pump", then make my deposit, then a nice blast with a little twerk action to get it nice and clean, then pat dry with a few squares of toilet paper.

Have one in each bath room and we both think it is great. Last year a few days after Christmas wife and I went to goodwill.

I was poking around in the blender, coffee maker section and there was an unopened Luxe bidet, like the ones we had, for $5. I think it was a present and the recipient probably thought no way I am going to use this. I now have a back up.

Can bidets be added to existing toilet or needs to be a separate fixture?

They replace your toilet seat, t-connection for the water and a basic valve to control water pressure on the basic models.

Pro tip: spray before going. Residue is less likely to stick to wet skin than dry.

This for sure. Sometimes I leave it running on low volume too while going.

You can just buy the seat if you're not going to get one that is heated. It's easy to install. You will need an electrical outlet if you want one that is heated. It has more functions than a non-heated bidet.

Sure they can install on existing toilets. Some come with a seat that replaces the existing, and some are just the sprayer and you keep your seat. These are really easy to install, the bidet sandwiches between the bowl and the seat. Controls hang off the side and tees into the water line going to the tank. If you can use a screwdriver and a wrench you can install one in 15 minutes.

It needs a "balls" setting.

My wife laughed at me after I installed one after spine surgery, which cause so much initial swelling, it limited my ability to wipe, to which caused me to have to take a shower after a BM….After the toilet paper shortage of a year ago, we laughed again as we felt way ahead of the game…. It’s been a joke in our house, but we have grown to really like it, and feel less clean without it…

I specifically asked for a outlet behind the toilet in my new build to add a heated bidet...

Yes and add a monthly pedicure to the list. Men that don't get pedicures have no idea what they're missing out on.

If you aren't handy you might need a plumber though.
glad someone said this. Husband could not get ours installed and now the toilet intermittently runs. The plumber will cost more than the damn bidet did.
