Yes, I use TripAdvisor for the reviews and general prices. I always call and place the reservation myself, and have had the price be cheaper a few times when I did call

but it takes forever to get enough points for free nights.
Basically 3 to 4 nights gets me 10-15k points = a free night at Marriott.

I was staying at the Embassy Suites a couple of years ago. Needed to extend my stay at Embassy a week due to a death in family. I booked my original stay on Hotwire. Embassy front desk would not extend my stay at the Hotwire price. Shift manager pulled me aside from the front desk and told me to book my extended stay on Hotwire to get lowest price. (I stay at this hotel often and can tell there listing on Hotwire due to unique amenities)
I'm staying at the same hotel next week and already booked a room. Embassy web site lowest price $119 - Hotwire $75

Third party websites are a pain. Just call the hotel and they'll price match whatever Priceline is quoting.

Flyertalk
If you can spend a little time learning how to navigate the site, every deal that can be had is on that site. What tigerdroppings is to LSU, Flyertalk is to travel deals.

I've gotten the best deals thru Priceline express deals.

And Hilton will match that $75 and offer you $50 credit assuming that wasn't a Hotwire "hidden deal".

Not a Hotwire Hidden Deal. Where on Hilton's website is the matching offer plus $50 credit? I am a Hilton Honors member. Do I have to call?

Hotel Tonight app if it's last second. Otherwise use credit card rewards points and transfer to your hotel account and get nights for free

It depends on where you're going. Out here I don't know of any hotels that will price match an online deal. Hotel Tonight is the only one that will book a room after midnight for that night's check in which comes in handy if you need something really last minute.
Expedia is good if you travel a lot but don't want to be tied to one particular hotel chain. You can get status points with them now so you can get free upgrades and other perks. Generally third parties are cheaper but you always run the risk of a fax not going through and your reservation never being made. Just call a couple days ahead of time and make sure they got it.

I worked at a four diamond hotel in college.
When it comes to billing issues, third party reservations are a nightmare. Plus, if something goes wrong with your stay you won't get any compensation from the hotel. It's prepaid, so there's no way for them to refund you. Making matters worse, they have zero incentive because you're not filling out one of their customer surveys. Plus, odds are you're a price sensitive customer who will never return anyway.
And that segues to another issue. If they're going to shaft someone - it's going to be a third party reservation. Overbooked? They'll call Expedia and tell them to walk a couple of their guests. Sold out? They're going to put the third party guests in the worst rooms.
As far as price matching goes, practices vary. We were instructed to match, provided we didn't go below our floor rate of 165. There were only a handful of times that I saw third party rates that could beat that. Generally they were one time promotions in the dead of winter when we were at our slowest. I would say that we could match more than 98% of the time.

Priceline express deals
I go there first. Then I go to Priceline Name Your Own Price and bid $10 lower. Works almost every time!

This. The actual hotel site will beat any offer from those other sites.

Never had an issue with hotels.com. Have used them traveling for work over the last few years and gotten multiple free nights and their customer service is legit. Had to cancel and/or change several times, called the 800 number and was taken care of immediately.
I have found that the prices are very similar for most third party websites. Find the one that offers the best incentive deals like free nights or points and pick the one that works best for you.
