I use Hertz because of the connection they have with Skymiles. I think I can rule them out as the best car rental company. They kinda suck.

Whichever has the best deal on Kayak or expedia. I also like to look for unlimited mile plan. The last few times I rented a car I went with Avis.

National, if you sign up and are a member. No easier process.
..and a quick look on flyer talk will get you some pretty decent rates.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car, because they got an excellent corporate structure and they give you the tools to be your own boss.

Hertz makes it the easiest. Land, get in car, leave.

My work has used them all, good, not so good and just plain awful. Even the best have their bad days though.
For personal business, I usually go with National.

This. Sad that I'm losing President's Circle this year.
If you're an infrequent renter, though, I think Alamo still has pretty good internet discount rates. Check the flyertalk forums to see which companies have coupons and discounts right now. There's always someone on there patting himself on the back for getting a $9 average per day rental.

National... And it's not close in my opinion.
Sign up for Emerald Club... You walk past the counter, to an entire selection of cars, which often include SUVs, get in the one you want and drive to the check out kiosk.
Enterprise makes you talk to three people... Why a guy has to wear a suit to hand me car keys, I'll never know.

Exactly, don't even have to talk to anyone until you're pulling out of the lot.

Same with National and Avis.
They are all owned by 3 companies total, no real difference to be honest.

And they walk around that old, dirty Hyundai marking down every ding and scratch.

I usually go with Budget as they have the best prices and are owned by Avis. I rented with National once and they gave me an F150 when I reserved an economy car which was nice.

Nothing but good with National. Just make sure you use a credit card and not a debit card. They don't like debit cards.

They are all very similar, but I rent with National often and occasionally get a cool upgrade from the typical midsized premium (Sonata, Malibu, Camry, Fusion) into an SUV (4Runner or Tahoe) and sometimes a premium luxury vehicle, which to them is a Cadillac CTS, Lexus GS, or BMW 528i.
I've seen them rent out BMW 7 series and Escalades, but I never get upgraded into anything quite that awesome.
