BATON ROUGE - According to documents obtained by The Investigative Unit, a woman accused of abandoning a child at the Cortana Mall Walmart Friday morning was served last week with papers in a lawsuit filed by someone trying to take custody of four of her children.

Chenetra Washington, 32, was booked with child desertion Friday. According to the arrest report, Washington allegedly brought her 3-year-old son into the Walmart with her. Police say surveillance video shows her leave the store and get into the passenger side door of a car, without any attempt to find her son. A Walmart employee found the boy, who was unable to communicate with police or store employees. Nearly five hours later, Washington returned to the store and was taken into custody and charged with child desertion.

During an interview with investigators Friday evening, deputies say she admitted to leaving the store with a friend to have sex.
The arrest report also says Washington told police she left the child in hopes someone would find him, and take better care of him then she could.

According to court documents, she is in the midst of a custody battle over four of her other children.

Hopefully the kids have some Native American blood so they can be taken care of properly by the government.

Most of them should never have been born. Nor should their parents have for that matter.

This concept that it's a right to have children is fair enough. But the PC culture has made it such that we can't shun people for having children irresponsibly. We're supposed to smile and bear it and help them and the children that should never have existed. Just because I have a right to do something doesn't mean society should smile upon me if I do it.

Harsh (and a socially taboo thing to say), but true.

It's fair to say people shouldn't have children irresponsibly. It's wanton hubris to say someone should never have existed. Those are not the same thing.

its one thing to try to curb irresponsible child birth. its another to say any one person should have never existed. and that goes beyond the point. sure, it was irresponsible for this mother to have so many children that she couldnt support and yes, we should do more to prevent irresponsible child birth, but its not the childs fault that they were born into that situation. now that they are alive, they have every right to be. just like you and i do

What amazes me, is that so many of them are quick enough to avoid the coat hanger.

ETA: Someone let me know if that is a bannable offense. I like this site too much to screw up.

I think you get a warning.

Not sure what you are saying. Is it that the same people who condemn people for irresponsible child bearing also condemn abortion? Or is it that people who aren't prepared for child rearing shun abortion?

Neither, it's a case of women having multiple baby daddy's and lots of them don't get abortions.

The more children you have the more money in welfare, WIC and EBT.

Although black women get more abortions than any other race in America. A duality thing.

As for the hanger thing, I heard that in boot camp in 1989. I laughed, then was told to push the earth until all the chinese broke their legs. Good times.

I'm not trying to ignite a debate on economic justice or the morality of abortion, but . . . .

A woman living in North Baton Rouge on WIC would probably have about zero chance of being able to obtain an abortion if she wanted one.

You do surface an interesting point: Some of the same people condemning abortion will upvote a post saying that some people should never have existed. I guess you can harmonize that, but to me it reeks of hypocrisy.

As for coat hanger as slang for abortion, I'm sure that would offend many. But this is a safe space . . . . At least when it comes to most kinds of offensiveness.

This isn't a problem unique to Baton Rouge.

I'm not sure it's even a fixable problem.

You are correct. It is a nationwide problem. I'm against abortion. I'm only for it in cases of rape, incest, etc...

As long as the Democrats keep giving out the money, they will get their votes. I'm conservative and it pisses me off. If the Dems would stop playing politics with these issues, we would all be better off.

I agree. I've put way more thought into a better way to take care the children in these situations. The foster system fails so many of them. Just like there are tons of people that look at children as welfare money, there are tons of others that look at them as foster money. The kids suffer in both scenarios.

As for foster care, the law requires efforts to reunify a child with family and to achieve permanency. If this child is removed, the first goal will be to put him back with family.

Unfortunately, foster folks attract pedophiles. The poor children can't win.

Medicaid doesn't cover abortions under the Hyde amendment.

Not even that, but the ability to get an abortion, especially in the south has become even harder than it had been in the past. Different rules for clinics and patients to follow make it less likely.

Of course, John Oliver has done a segment on this.

IMO, it starts with education. This country needs an absolute education reform. Make education the most important social issue in this country and make teachers one of the highest paying professions in the country. Reform schools and guidelines. It starts as children. Make parents responsible for their children's education and start punishing the parents if their kids fail or disrupt school.

I think for the bad kids, a mandatory military school should be implemented if they don't abide by school rules/guidelines or drop out.

The root problem of this country is the massive amount of lack of education that has failed most every one.

IMO, eliminate the lack of education and you start eradicating most of this way of life.

Follow Japan's education plans and system if you have to just to get idea of what needs to be done.

Education should be first. Always. Continue to allow parents to not raise their kids or care about their education, this country will never get out of its hole that it's in.
