i'm not saying anyone did wrong. i don't think its out of line to stay that LEO should use this as a model just to go over tactics and procedures again. Is there anything that can be learned from this etc. This might become more common place in near future.

The problem is that no one knew his target was the officers. For all they knew he was going around killing everyone. They went in to save lives.

I want you to think about what officers would train for more, active shooter indiscriminately shooting people or a shooter specifically targeting cops. Up until 2 weeks ago one scenario was a lot more common than the other.

Yes, and don't forget open carry is legal in this state so they probably weren't thinking anything of that call.
They weren't rolling up on someone necessarily committing a crime. Just a concerned citizen.
This is why most gun owners get pissed at the dumbasses walking around with their AR just to get publicity. Is it legal....yes. are they dumbasses....yes.

i understand which is why i think its a game changer and maybe rethink tactics and make sure they are still doing everything tactically that they think is best. I don't know what that is, if they would re-do everything exactly how they did, that's fine.

We know in this case the caller was correct in his ID of a weapon, but could the officers assume there was in fact someone out there with a rifle? I'm sure they followed their training appropriately. It's possible they thought they were rolling up on someone either legally carrying or someone with some sort of misidentification of the situation.
I just wonder how many calls came in, and what was said on them. It could have been a different scenario for these fellows had a caller seen the shooter approach that empty cop car with his weapon up and ready to fire and reported that. If that could have somehow been communicated, perhaps these officers would have been on higher alert because of the appearance of a man hunting police.

He wasn't all there to begin with and then he got all hopped up the BLM propaganda and raging against whitey and the man. Once someone starts calling people demeaning terms and describing them in ways that strip them of their humanity they start to perceive them as apart/different and then this kind of shite isn't too far of a jump for them, unfortunately.

This is my working hypothesis.
Killer spends two years in Africa and comes back to American with an African girlfriend (the "yoga instructor"). They both come to Baton Rouge. She gets arrested in the protests. Because she is here on a visa and committed a crime, she gets deported. He shoots cops in revenge, inspired by whatever cop-killing rhetoric is around. I think it all comes down to that.
This is all a WAG, but that's my guess.

I know there have been Gofundme's set up for each officer that died. Is there an insurance policy funded by the city that automatically kicks in if a LEO is killed in the line of duty?
What financial plans have been made for any LEO's family, by his employer, in case the worst happens?
I am asking because I do not know but it seems as if this would be mandatory.

Someone the other day was saying that the dead officers should receive something from a life insurance policy... it's the ones that were injured and may not be able to return to work that will be hurting for money.
Terrible situation all around but we're all so focused on the cops that were killed that I don't think much thought has gone into the cops that were seriously injured and what their futures hold.

You are correct. It is not enough. It is up to individual departments as to how much insurance coverage they provided. There will be some money contributed by the feds as well as education benefits to the children (I believe they receive free attendance to state universities).
It won't be anywhere near what that previous incident generated through gofundme, however.

pretty clear they had no clue what they were walking into. Obviously, they knew they were dealing with an armed man but had no way of knowing it was a total ambush.
also, I'd imagine the officer that wasn't in that initial car is going through some shite right now.
