I saw where an ordinance removing the requirement for drivers to to be fingerprinted and getting a background check failed via a vote, and they were pushing for people to support the ordinance.

Yes, after Uber/Lyft lost their campaign (they spent $8 million, most expensive election in history) they suspended service this morning.

There is mention of them leaving Houston also because of this fingerprinting thing.

The DWI arrests skyrocket upwards in Austin now. Texas as a whole is becoming increasingly backwards with their stance on Uber & Lyft. Time for that state to join the rest of the world.

And, unfortunately, the city has political ammo b/c of this guy.

POS Here

Who would have been denied under the fingerprint system, but got through Uber's screening.

Why can't uber just set a place up or hire a third party to do this? It seems like it's still a pretty low barrier to entry.

Wouldn't it have cost them much less to just comply with the fingerprint / background check? This whole thing stinks on both sides. I'm all for safety, but I'm not sold that the city's requirements that they are pushing will provide much more, if any, safety for riders.

Completely ridiculous. Uber made our most recent trip to Austin SO much better. The insane taxi lobby is strong

They are plenty of examples on top of that one.

This isn't exactly great times for Uber image-wise.

Why in the hell do they not fingerprint and background check their drivers to begin with?

I hope not. My middle son sold his car a few years ago and relies heavily on Uber. He lives in Bouldin and it was cheaper/easier for him to just Uber to and from work.

They are all about getting as many drivers in as they can in every market. If you have a criminal history, you have a shot at this too.

In Austin, yes, but this was about more than just Austin. This was a bellwether election. Other cities are contemplating similar regulations, so Uber and Lyft poured money into this one figuring if they could win Austin, it would domino to later elections or derail those regulations in other cities.

Good point. Now that they've lost...I wonder what other cities will do...
