They're playing with fire as far as market-share goes. There's a lot of tech know-how here and a TON of entrepreneurialism. What's stopping someone with relevant business experience from teaming with an app developer and getting funding from Austin Ventures to start their own ride-share service that complies with the law? With how everyone here loves local anything (beer, vodka, chickens, you name it) it might take off in the vacuum and be hard to supplant once Uber returns. All anyone drinks so far as unflavored Vodka is Tito's, both because Tito lives here and also because it's legitimately the best cheap vodka. I wouldn't be surprised if someone applied that to ride-sharing.

Not that I know of. But to be honest, i talked to a few people around here that literally told me "I was for Prop 1 until Uber started calling me multiple times per day and driving it down my throat."

When they started harassing me while trying to get a snow cone by the pawn shop on Guadalupe, I thought to myself... this kind of crap, city-wide, is going to be their undoing.

I don't think anyone really won in the immediate aftermath. It's kind of like a game of chicken where no one chickened out. The future remains to be seen, but it's not like this is an unsolvable challenge.

Seems like a lose-lose over emotional bullshite all started by government employees who have to invent shite to do so they look like they are doing something ("progressing")
But I'm not an Austin resident and don't have any plans to visit soon so doesn't affect me so don't really care. You do you, Austin.

Funny you mentioned this. I was walking by a bar Saturday and heard someone call for a Tito's, and it caught my attention. The only bar I've been where that wouldn't be strange is at Lucy's in NO because of the Tito's Lemonade.
Now I know why that happened.

I have always told people I thought Austin was a top 3 city in America. I have instantly just lost a ton of respect for the city letting this happen.

No, but as a resident of Austin, I would feel like we lost something of value to me because we didn't want to feel like "they were picking on us".
Get over it. Maybe they were, but if that's the price we have to pay to have an efficient/effective taxi service, so be it.

The general vibe I get from people here is that they don't want to be thought of as a top city. It really is the strangest dynamic I've ever experienced. When I first moved here, I was shopping for furniture, and the salesman literally told me "Welcome to Austin, don't forget to leave."

Tito's is cheap as hell for as good as it is (it's the well vodka at a lot of places in Austin but it's waaaay better than traditional wells like Taaka or McCormicks), especially here since there's no cost to distribute it and because Tito's themselves subsidize the hell out of it in bars to get people drinking it, plus it's Austin's own vodka, so it's like a patriotic thing to drink it. Also, Tito Beverage himself is a cool cat who a lot of long-time residents have good stories about, so there's significant goodwill for them.
As far as the local flavored Vodkas go - get you some Deep Eddy. Their cranberry and grapefruit are ridiculous and are my go-tos for some of my favorite simple summer cocktails.

good to know. Those sound good. Ya, I was sort of aware of Tito's Austin relationship but this just brought it all back. Good stories.
I'm a big fan of cheap booze. My answer to "gin preference?" is a simple "Nope." every time.

You are exactly right. Some of the first lessons taught in business school are about the product life cycle and the advantage of first to the market. Basically first to the market should always be the leader in the market throughout the life cycle.
Uber is in the early adopter segment of Ride sharing and were the first to market in Austin. They should always have an advantage over some other startup. However, in this case Uber did the opposite of what business professors teach and removed themselves from the Austin market on their own accord.
It will be interesting to see how the gamble pays offs if they take a six month or longer hiatus. Some other company will jump in to attack thier market share, and if or when Uber returns, it will interesting to see if the market uber built will come back to them or if those people moved on to a different service.
One thing is for sure, Austin is a very lucrative market for ride sharing. If I was Ceo of a ride share business, I would do whatever I needed to do to keep that revenue flowing. I sure as hell wouldn't be leaving the market when I was the unquestioned leader of it.

Yeah man, it doesn't taste chemically or off like other flavored vodkas. It tastes like the actual fruit. Pour some of the Deep Eddy grapefruit over rocks and fill the rest with soda to taste. Squeeze a half of a lime in there and toss in the rind. Boom. Simple & cheap and good. Or, for a shooter: 1 ounce Deep Eddy grapefruit ½ ounce silver tequila, squeeze in a quarter of a lime. Boom.
