We don't even understand physics ourselves though so how can we compare hypothetical mastery of physics to our basic understandings?
You do know the theory of relativity has been proven, several times, to be extremely accurate?

There is a theoretical Types IV and V civilizations, and unlike 2 and 3, there's a good chance we wouldn't be able to detect it. These get more into the level of :drumroll: Interstellar aliens where they are extra dimensional. But the logical way most aliens would gather energy is through planets and stars, and that could be detected.
But you're speaking in absolutes. I'm saying you can't say things like this:

that could be detected
Even if we had the technology to detect and monitor that kind of shite, we'd still have to be looking in the right place(s).

Again, it's just as likely (or unlikely) that they have mastered gravity and manipulate miniature black holes for energy. Or antimatter. You types of guys are supposed to be the ones to think outside of the box, right?
Well, they need matter to create these things, so still they would likely siphon stars and planets for the matter they need. Type 2 Civilizations require a mass supply of energy, and they've got to mine the material to make black holes and antimatter (which does not occur naturally).

Again, they need matter as we know it to do these things.

That's sort of my point. You're speaking in absolutes about what this particular set of species requires. That's all based on earth principles.
I feel like I'm not explaining myself well, which is often the case in this type of thread. But we have no idea what they are capable of or the kinds of things they'd have access to, and shite like that. Even based on our earth principles, for all we know they may have mastered things like energy and are focused on things far more advanced than that (things we can't even begin to acces or understand).

I haven't read through the thread, but has anyone pointed out yet that the real title is that 1500 years ago, megastructures appeared around this star? It is 454 parsecs away (about 1481 light years).

Are you trying to say that the theory of relativity is the final word on all things under the umbrella of physics? Man this is going to be easy to argue.
Are you really contending that we know everything already?

Wait wait did you just say antimatter doesn't occur naturally?
You do realize there is more antimatter than matter in the universe right?

No, that's Dark Matter, not Antimatter. Big difference between the two of them. We really don't have a clue what Dark Matter is, but Antimatter is merely an atom in reverse, with the center being negatively charged and the outside being positively charged. Antimatter and matter theoretically got in a war near the beginning of the universe, and matter won. Sure, there may be some antimatter floating out there somewhere, but it's highly, highly volatile.

get how people don't believe there's other intelligent life in this universe.
Seems a lot easier to believe than that there is no uncaused cause, and tons of people believe that.

wasn't trying to say that at all.
It's a pretty important equation and it's pretty damn accurate in the world of physics.

The Millennium Falcon can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 Parsecs. Han Solo will be there in no time.

A few thousand years ago people thought the earth was the center of the universe and that the sun rotated us.
A few hundred years ago people thought the earth was flat
150 years ago and people thought flight was impossible, physics and all
A few decades ago we broke the sound barrier
I'm just saying we know next to nothing. We are like toddlers that think they knew everything and run around saying "mine! Mine!"
Enjoy the thread I'll leave yall alone now.

Well this would be a Type 2 Civilization, which really means only another Type 2 or 3 Civilization could wipe them out. I see no reason why this confirms the Fermi Paradox.
i'm sure you're familiar with the "rare, first, or fricked" explanations. if we find intelligent life so close to us (relatively speaking of course), it's far more likely that it's because life isn't as special as we thought, and not because we've happened upon the only other intelligent life in the galaxy. what an amazing, but also nearly improbable coincidence. since the improbable is much less likely, it suggests we're both still on our way to the great filter.

Cmon bro, if you think humans understand physics at anything greater than a base level, then it shows how much you don't know
That bit was definitely a joke.
I do believe that when we eventually do find other life out there, it's going to have a LOT more in common with us (or, future us) than we expect. I'll explain why.
If you believe in the Fermi paradox (which makes a lot of sense to me) then we are either ahead of or behind the 'great filter' and most likely we are behind it. Simply because whatever ridiculously large percentage of intelligent beings are behind it, then we are most likely in that percentage. Unless you believe that the Kardashians are part of the infinitely small percentage of being ahead of the great filter... I choose not to believe that.
So, we are behind the filter... it's still in our future, and there are likely countless other worlds out there that are with us on this path. Subscribing to the thought that the simplest explanation is usually the best one, it would make sense that those other civilizations that are behind the filter are likely also carbon-based and located in their planets' Goldilocks Zone and are evolving just like life on Earth.
I'm not saying that they are walking around on two feet and listening to techno music, but they are most likely comprised of the same basic components of life that we have. I think the basic theories of evolution and biochemistry likely hold true across the universe and in particular to all the civilizations that are on our side of the filter.
They might be more advanced than us... although if we find them it's more likely that future us is more advanced than they are... but either way is possible. Maybe they have developed telepathic means of communication? I don't even think that's too far in the future in our own evolution. Or perhaps they have developed sentient robotics, again something that isn't too far-fetched. Or maybe they have evolved into something we can't comprehend yet, possible, but still most likely something that could be in our future, by the time we are able to travel to other inhabited worlds.
All that said, I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords.
