I just got an invite from a friend on fb who's bday is coming up soon. The invite is asking for people to donate to a charity for her bday instead of giving her bday gifts.

On one hand....it's for a good cause(the charity is a domestic violence shelter).

On the other hand, I'm not that close to her and wouldn't have gotten her a bday gift in the first place. She already invited a bunch of us to some expensive restaurant to celebrate her bday(and I'm assuming all of us will be responsible for paying her bill). Also I now see her getting loads of praise on fb for doing this. Background on this fb friend...she posts selfies all the time of everything she does. She's the chick that posts a selfie in a bikini with a caption "Sunday Funday!". So this thing kinda seems like another grab for attention and praise.

Would this bug you just a little bit?

She's hot for her age(not sure exact age...I wanna say she is 39-41ish). She used to be really overweight when she was much younger and dedicated herself to getting fit.

She def has a nice body.

Isn't this just a way to say no gifts vs donate to charity?

I'd say well over half of charity is intended to make the donor feel good rather than for actual altruistic purposes. Donate if you want to and don't if you don't want to.

You're not close to her.

Pics.

Pics determine whether or not to donate and, if so, how much.

That's exactly what it is. She wants attention and feels this is the most acceptable way to get it. There's no other reason for a person to send gift requests to people who would never buy them gifts.

I also have a problem with people over the age of 21 (at most) expecting gifts on their birthday from anyone who isn't a significant other.
