She wasn't even trying to set for the world record, she was trying to get the WOMENS record.

You could turn that question around. Should a person be prohibited from doing something they really enjoy in order to not risk saddening other people? Wouldn't that mean those other people are being selfish, for similar reasons to the ones you stated?

She didn't TRY to kill herself.

Is she any more selfish than a businessman who sacrifices all of his family time to become wealthy?

Why is there a women's land speed record? Why not just a land speed record? How are women at a disadvantage?

You know, chick stuff.

That is the essence of my point. If Andy Green died tomorrow and I posted he died how many people would think "oh yeah thats the guy that holds the land speed record".

Rocket-powered Motorcycle. Show me the person who holds the LSR riding that. THAT would impress me.

Get him out on the salt flat and watch him go.

She died doing something she loved and her friends knew she loved. I don't wanna go down in a hospice somewhere knowing the greatest thrill I had was not wearing socks once on casual Friday.

Here's a young woman, 36 years old, who had her entire life ahead of her and she basically threw it in the trash. For what? To break a world speed record? Now her family, friends, etc. are in mourning because she had to be selfish and try to be a hot shot.

I know that your life is yours and you can do anything you want, as long as you aren't hurting anyone, but I can't help but see this shite as selfish. There are people dying of diseases who would love to just have a healthy life to enjoy and others who are healthy just throw it all away.

I'm not a risk taker, so maybe I just don't "get it", which is fair.

So folks should not be a police officer, play organized sports, join the military, be an astronaut, skydive, ski or a lot of other activities because it might increase the chance of dying?

Perhaps we should avoid being in a car at all? Traffic fatalities in the United States were over 40,000 last year. How SELFISH of us to get in ANY car. Getting in a car is probably as dangerous because the officer investigating this death said there had been no known deaths in the desert while drivers attempted land speed records during his 23-year career with the sheriff's department.

This take of yours actually seems arrogant. This woman did not just arrogantly throw caution to the wind. There were risks but their were precautions and safety protocols that unfortunately were not enough.

As an addendum I would bet my life that many of those folks dying of diseases have regrets about things they did not do before they got that disease.

The OT has this conversation periodically. I have always believed that it is highly selfish bordering on narcissistic to take life or death risks ( like Mt Everest) if you have young dependent children. If that’s not the case, knock yourself out.

Some of these things need not be extreme risks if you use common sense to analyze the activity and take a modicum of precaution. I would say someone with kids who smokes or is obese is MUCH more irresponsible.

There had not been any deaths of folks going for speed records on the flats for at least a quarter century. How risky is that? As to Everest, the idea of the climb is not the life-or-death risk. Almost all of the deaths on Everest were the result of summit attempts that went against common-sense advice.

People die early for smoking or eating too much. Are they also throwing it all away?

Honestly, there is no way to explain it to you.
Your premise is so flawed, there'd be no point in arguing.

She wasn't a BASE jumper in the middle of a city, she was well-organized and was doing what she loved in as safe a manner as possible.
