Here's a young woman, 36 years old, who had her entire life ahead of her and she basically threw it in the trash. For what? To break a world speed record? Now her family, friends, etc. are in mourning because she had to be selfish and try to be a hot shot.

People said the same things about those damn Write brothers

Why is there a women's land speed record? Why not just a land speed record? How are women at a disadvantage?

That is an interesting question I had not thought about before.

Generally, land speed records don't have protected gender classes and there are several women that hold speed records in certain vehicle classes, primarily motorcycles where most women have a weight advantage over most men and the bikes don't have competition weight added. I assume the women's LSR is a legacy record that is just kept up with. The record dates back over 100 years and at that time women as a class would have had a distinct disadvantage over men.

I've casually perused for more than a decade. Only recently have I begun to delve into conversation.

Because they don't have balls.

LSRs are not exactly an attention whoring accomplishment. Most records like that are done more for internal satisfaction that external accolades. If I went out and did 800mph in a car tomorrow (absolute LSR) it would barely be a blip in the news cycle. tOT wouldn't even know my name until 2 years from now when The Gnome posted an old Reddit thread.

I'm definitely not a modern feminist ally, but would you have crafted this rant is she'd been a dude? I see threads on here about guys dying while doing all kinds of things, but no one ever calls them selfish because of their families.

I remember her from Mythbusters. I just thought she was another one of their tatted up, San Fran "interns."

Eh, I don't know about that. I remember it being a kinda big deal when I was a kid anyway. Dude with the Budweiser sponsored land missile.

The difference here is she wasn't going for the absolute record, just the mythical women's record.

These records are dumb anymore as they are not cars. They are jet engines on wheels.

The wheel driven rides can be interesting. And apparently they are pretty hairy trying to put 1000+hp down through those narrow speed tires. Usually on salt.

That is the essence of my point. If Andy Green died tomorrow and I posted he died how many people would think "oh yeah thats the guy that holds the land speed record".

You answered your own question. Wouldn't it be more selfish to restrict someone from doing what they love because you can't bear the thought of having to grieve at some point? Your hypothetical loss should limit their lives? Don't live your life because you might cause me pain is some narcissistic shite.

It would be selfish of someone else to tell her how to live her own life.

ETA: and you’re also glossing over what she was trying to do as if it were trying to take a stupid selfie on a cliff or something. She was trying to achieve a goal that she set for herself. We all die at some point and not everyone wants to spend their life living in a protective box.

Just dumb.

Wasn't smart enough to know it's better to be alive than to be fast.

I was actually going to mention how when I was a kid it was a different story. Even my mom would have known what the Blue Flame car was, it was actually part of pop culture then I assume riding on the rocket angle since space was all over pop culture then.

As an aside the Budweiser rocket car never held any records. The purported top speed run (supersonic) was not sanctioned, the radar equipment was not calibrated nor used correctly. The first "car" to go faster than the supposed speed they generated was the Thrust SSC in 1997 which holds the record to date IIRC ~760mph and the only official supersonic run.

Wasn’t she trying to break her own record? If so then she is definitely a dumbass.

Hell, I forgot about that. Guess it's true no one cares about LSR anymore other than those out there doing it.

Because why? She didn’t dedicate her life to raising a bunch of fricking kids and making sandwiches? Some people spend their life doing that. Some people want to enjoy their life on their own terms. Nothing wrong with either. It’s not your place or anyone else’s place to judge.
