No shite. Flat from pants scream vanity on a physically fit masculine guy, look hipster on an those with feminine builds and for the even slightly portly folks, looked like you shoved a lot of sausage and leg quarters in your pants at the local piggly wiggly.

I wear both based on the next one up in my closet.

I do feel like an old man a little when I throw on the pleats, though.

cuffed pants were more formal

I've got flat and pleated. Never really paid that much attention to it really. I do notice slacks without cuffs. The no cuff look seems unfinished to me.

Where was this assumption coming from

Going to any suit store or tailor more than 10 years ago. Get your pants tailored and they would ask cuff or no cuff. And would suggest cuff if this was a more formal suit. Pleats were prominent in suit pants or slacks, flat fronts were prominent in chinos or maybe banana republic type suits. Theres even a page on the Brooks Brothers website that says go with pleats for the dressier look. It does also say flat front is slimmer, but the overall message is pleats are dressy. Flat front made its way on to the scene when ratiining cloth in WW2 (google bitches). So it was basically a poorer version of the pant and therefore less dressy. As with everything in our culture, it caught on as main stream when most could only afford that option. We as a society have consistenly lowered the bar for what we consider formal. Bank tellers used to wear 3 piece suits for God's sake. Flat fronts didnt become equal to the pleated pant in regards to dressyness until around 2000 give or take. Not that they weren't around, just transitioning.

People saying they've never seen a skinny person in pleats or pleats are the cargo short of pants must be young. Pleats went out of style in the 60s and 70s and came back again, just as I'm sure they will make a run at popularity again. If I had to buy a suit to last forever, I'd contemplate a pleat as I think it has more staying power as the dressy option. But good thing I can afford to stay with the times, as I will admit that they are out of place at the moment.

I'm not that young, and I'll go ahead and agree with the people saying that pleats are like cargo pants.

I actually used to be a diehard "pleats are no worse than flat front and are more formal in most ways" kind of person, too, until I finally moved out of the South.

A power or custom suit these days should not have pleats. It looks sloppy and chubby.

As long as Americans in general are sloppy and fat (which will be a long time), slim-fitted suits will be in style and the wardrobe of decision-makers. It sets one apart from the masses and betrays a fit physique that you want to display.

Fashion is so fricking trivial.

I can't wait to turn 60 so I can wear jump suits, cargo jorts, crocs, trucker caps, and black funeral t-shirts without giving a frick.

I hate everything slim fit. I have really broad shoulders, none of that ever fits right. Plus I hate tight closes.

Your pleated pants don't have cuffs?

In Europe I'd tend to agree, in the U.S. I don't think you could be more wrong. Just looks hipster here. Hipsters don't have a lot of power in the states. Most of the power lies with old white dudes (who tend to be fat & conservative and thus more likely to wear/need pleats) here.

A lot of young posters in this thread. Flat fronts were with the standard business suit for years. Not skinny legged pants, just flat front. Then pleats took hold in the 80's. In both cases, though, cuffs were the norm.

I wear flat fronts with cuffs on dress pants. Uncuffed pants just look unfinished. As well, trends will change, and the flux is starting. I would not invest heavily in skinny leg suits. While I'd hate to see a return to the totally oversized, baggy clothes of the late 80's, super skinny will seem just as ridiculous in a few years.

They have those almost high water tight pants. Looks like pure shite. You can see that we will be looking back at that trend and laughing at how stupid they look.

I only have flat panels now, but they fit right and are not short and tight.

I'm not even old but am aware of fashion cycles. People are ragging on pleats like its a fat man thing are cargo short lame are just naive to the facte that its am older style. Its not like it used to be acceptable to wear cargo shorts and there are people who just havent caught up with the times. That's a new (ish) trend thats just always been a little polarizing. Pleats were around forever as the go to, then went out in the 60s and 70s, then came back until the mid to late 90s and they'll come back again I'm sure.

Like you pointed out with slim fit clothes, look at the tight shirts and pants people wore in the 70s, then everyone went baggy in the 80s and 90s. We're at slim fit now, but we'll swing back. Then you'll all be dressing like fatties. I admit I wear toilored fit clothes now, but dont dismiss a person for wearing pleats. Especially if they are over 40. I don't expect my bosses to roll up in trendy suits.

Sidenote, I'm not a very big guy. I've got chicken legs in my opinion. I wear slim fit or tailored pants, and there is no room for my quads in some pairs of pants. I don't know how you can expect most people to keep up with the trendy slim fit fashions.
