How tough is this hobby to get into? My city offers a sailing club membership for ~$250 and you can take out city owned sail boats

I've never been out by myself, but I've been out plenty with friends and such, it's a great time.
I don't think it's incredibly difficult to get into, just not a cheap hobby, especially if you want your own boat at some point. (and boat slip)

Really want a sailboat. Don't know shite about them yet but it's on my short list.

Done it a lot. I think it all depends on where you live and what your options are for where you can sail to. I think just sailing around in the water with no destination isn't that great. Sailing to different islands and exploring is awesome though.

Sailing is huge up here. I haven't taken lessons yet but it's on my to do list in the spring.
SO is a Harvard student and they have boats that you can use for free with a student ID, so after the lessons it will be a cheap hobby and great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

You can slip into an abandoned slip for free at the NOLA yacht club.

This is what I want to do. Maybe spend a whole summer island hopping in the Inside Passage.

I hear the sailboat market is flooded with boats people bought and don't use. Someone told me you can get a solid starter boat for like $7k where I live

That's about what my brother paid for a used one, decent size, needed a little work but nothing major.

Found this for $2,000, looks like a nice starter rig.

Probably needs work...although I know absolutely nothing about sailing
I feel like a $250 membership to freely rent sailboats whenever is a pretty fricking good deal

It's in good shape. I want one with a decent diesel engine too though. This one just has a kicker.

I have a cousin that retired from the rat race a few years early and meets up with a guy that sails around the world during the warm months or when ever the weather is appropriate. He has stayed on the vessel for aslong as 4-5 months. Then departs and another small group of the captains friends jump on. I follow them on fb. My cousin usually does this once per yr.

Grew up sailing and I love it. Haven't done it in a few years though. It can definitely be an expensive hobby. I'm lucky enough that several family members own sailboats.

I sailed growing up.
My grandfather taught me. He used to race out of PYC.
Some of the best racing happens on Wednsday nights over there. It's no joke.

I have a friend who sails around the Arctic when the ice allows in the summer. He works in winter, and sails summer and early fall. He goes from S.E. Alaska to Greenland with stops in the Canadian Arctic. He has a blog to keep track of him and the things he's doing. It's pretty cool
