Mercedes sprinter RVs are pretty sweet. I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on one. Small enough to go anywhere cars go, but big enough for travel and sleeping. 20+ mpg is nice, too.

Mine was 35 feet. 230 Cummins TD on an Oshkosh chassis. If you think it's fun watching your neighbors try to park one, you'll think it's hilarious the first time they have to have it towed.

Well I wasn't looking for a bf and I didn't start seeing this man until 4 months after I split from my husband. It's not like I am sleeping with him or anything. I told him from the beginning that despite the fact that my ex is sleeping around that I am not like that. He respects that.

As for the cheating ex, he moved his ho and her kids into his house and is already tired of her and is cheating on her, lol. Plus she has no car, no job and expects him to support her expensive habits. Now he is stuck with her because he doesn't want to admit that everyone was right when they told him he was screwing up by being with her.

Anyway, as i told him when we split, he was doing me a favor. He thought I had blown my inheritance money but I had hidden it and the money just keeps rolling in. He thinks he will get half my money in the divorce, lol. Meanwhile he is flat broke and is about to be walking because the truck he drives was paid for by me and I will be getting it in the divorce.

He can keep the community property because all of the good, expensive furniture, appliances and stuff was bought by me before marriage or given to me by my family and I already took possession of all that.

It just keeps getting better and he brought it all on himself.

growing up we had two. My parents bought them both used. I liked taking the 2-3 week vacations in them. We would go to a destination and stop at every major site in between. I doubt I would have visited random places like Cooperstown, Dodge City or Hannibal had we not had motorhomes.

Both had a chevy 454 carbureted and would always have one breakdown every trip. That was a given. Luckily it was such a common motor that even the worst break down was just a four hour walk in the desert for a Auto store.
Hell the first RV broke down and the glowing exhaust set a fuel line on fire that started a small forest fire in Yellowstone. Fun times.

The last trip I took in the RV was right before the Hurricane we parked it at Mardi Gras. Going to leave the fuel pump went out. I had to wire a jumper to the running lights to get power to the fuel pump. Even on 10 mile trips it would break down.
Still I miss both of them.

They are cheaply made. My travel trailer is about 7k fully loaded and my Dodge pulls it with ease. I've never had any issues after a year of moving around.

I've had a bunch of them... have one now.

Just know... they're all pieces of shite. From a top of the line Prevost diesel pusher to a bumper pull travel trailer.

Truth. You will always have shite to fix on it. We are on our second 5th wheel.

Mom and Dad have had a number of 5th wheels also. There's always something to fix or something that will piss you off.

I have a 36' 5th wheel and we love it. I had a 29' TT before that and it did well.

Even if nothing breaks, there's always something that needs done like tires, lube the slide gears, etc.

Here's my spin. My extended family just came back from Disney. With 17 of us, we figured renting some campers and staying at Ft. Wilderness would be the way to go. We had 3 bumper pulls ranging in size from 36-40 ft. They were all very nice, and fully equipped(outdoor kitchen, ceiling fans, "fireplaces"). We were in the market anyway and thought that would be a good way to see if we'd like it. After the trip, I say nope. Or at least not yet. I take care of people all day long everyday. When I go on vacation I don't want to have worry about Making the bed, or washing towels, or cleaning the camper, or washing dishes, or taking out the trash. It's going to hotels for us, at least till my little ones are older.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. We bought a used Class A from PPL Motorhomes in Houston when our kids were just starting elementary school. Used it for almost all vacations till high school time then sold it ... again at PPL ... for the same price we paid for it minus their commission. The kids universally agree, as do we, that these were the best vacations we have had. Only sold it because high school activities of the kids prevented us from using it.

Vacations: Went to campgrounds in Asheville, Gatlinburg, Destin, Disney World, Alabama, Texas and lots of places in Louisiana. You have to PLAN to use it. Took three week-long vacations a year in it plus tried to do a weekend trip every 6 to 8 weeks to somewhere close [like a casino RV park, or a state park or Natchez/Visalia area]. The best times were just hanging out in a campground, cooking outside, making a puzzle with the kids or throwing the football, or watching them ride scooters and bikes, or playing cards.

Tow car: we planned ahead so one of our cars was a towable car; the RV we bought from PPL came with a towbar. We paid local dealer to add tow equipment to car.

Class A or trailer: We LOVED being in the unit while driving it down the road. Just personal preference, but many people are happy with their 5th wheels!

Repairs: Yes, there were some but not much. And, if you take DisneyWorld out of the equation and you just go to state parks or to a national park where you can hike for free and picnic each day, your vacations are really cheap.

Which unit: my advice is to get something about 4 years old so you are getting a pretty depreciated unit that should still be very nice with updated amenities. Look for LOW MILEAGE and newish tires. We got a gas unit at about 20000 miles and then sold it at around 55000 miles.

Never regretted this decision for a second and looking forward to getting one for ourselves to take our grandkids in when we retire.

Thanks for all the opinions good and bad. We are looking at a bumper pull type, not too long. I'm 6'7" but have found a few with a vaulted ceiling up to 6'10" which is nice. Just need some bunks for the boys and a bed for us. Outdoor kitchen seems pretty common now. An outdoor tv would be nice for tailgating too.

Never thought about the abundance of used until the suggestions started coming in. I've since seen several Facebook used pages with local sellers. The idea of a new one isn't bad either though so we will have to wait and see. We may take the advice and try Shreveport shopping next.

There is some sound advice in this thread, especially about RV's being somewhat cheaply made. My father in law is on his fifth unit in 25 years. Says he wont go anywhere but Gauthier's on I-10 after years of terrible service experiences at the other dealers in the area. He'll drive a little further to get there now (also lives near Alexandria). You don't want to buy a new unit and then have it laid up in the dealer's device lot for 4 months because of incompetent service departments.

He also said used is fine but buyer beware. Some places will sell you campers with soft slide floors and rotten leaky roofs, so inspect them well.

After Hurricanes Rita and Ike wiped out the camps we had near the coast, I bought a bumper-pull to park and use as a movable camp in the event of another(will happen) hurricane. I have had some repairs to make as others have stated.
I hate moving and setting it up and would not consider it as a vacation unit(thats just me).
I now have it parked on a leased lot on Larto Lake with a large cover over it. Suits me fine. I would suggest that you take your time, do plenty of research, get one with a large shower/bathroom and strongly consider a used unit. I would buy an Airstream in a minute if you want to pull one. Leaks are very rare, they are light, and easy to sell(just more expensive-for a reason). Good luck.

Very true statement. The are not made as durable as boats for damn sure. Just about every trip i make i find something that needs to be fixed. 90% of the time it is minor and nothing that will stop you from using it but still just irritating. That said i have had my current 5th wheel for 8 years. My kids love it and the 5th wheel is so much easier to hook up and tow. Bite the bullet and put a good set of michellin tires and get rid of that chinese junk that comes with them. After two blowouts i did that and three years later the michellins still look great with zero issues.

Pull behinds and 5th wheels are great if you are not going to be driving very far, but an rv is so much better for actually traveling and it's not close.

The best part of an rv is literally waking up and pulling out of the parking spot while the coffee is brewing and the family is still asleep. When the wife wakes up she can literally hear you up breakfast and pour your coffee. Then the family and kids can sit at the table and eat. Road trips in a truck are still road trips in a truck, not nearly the room or comfort.

I bought a pop up camper as our first RV last year. We have children that are in elem school and both wife and I grew up camping. We searched for a used popup and found one about 6 years old. I had my brother and FIL with me to inspect the thing. I was looking for something that even though it showed some age, it had a knowledgeable owner who used it often and could tell that it was taken care of and good maintenance was performed on the camper.

We took it to the mountains for thanksgiving and will be going to the beach in the summer and Disney World this year with it along with smaller extended weekend trips throughout the year. I really do love being able to just hook it up to the truck and take off for the weekend and "get away from it all" for a while.
