Like everyone has said earlier, they are all tremendous pieces of shite. Everything breaks all the time, they are expensive, they depreciate quicker than anything you'll ever own and the only way you'll be able to sell it for near what you have into it is to trade it back in to the dealership for a more expensive one.

Even a basic bumper pull will run you what, 20-30k? Just think how many hotel rooms you can buy with that. If you're into the wilderness thing, there are a ton of well run, clean state parks that rent cabins for like $100 a night. Plus...you get to shite in a real toilet.

I've seen a ton of people get upside down on them and only use them a few times a year. Maybe it makes sense for some, but from what I've seen, they are usually a money pit.

Had one.

My grandmother gave me an Allegro Bus after my grandfather passed away. I was super excited about it. Dropped a few grand on new tires and another couple grand on small things when I first got it to spruce it up (it sat while my grandfather was sick and things needed repairing).

So I do all of that and go to take it to its first tailgate. The damned Allison transmission shifts into neutral on its own in the middle of 3 lanes of rush hour traffic and won't go back in gear. It takes 5 hours for a semi truck wrecker to come pull it out of traffic. It goes to diesel shop where I find out that some $2500 chip in the transmission control module shorted out. Had that repaired and sold it as soon as I got it back.

Anyone have experince with pull behinds/5th wheels? I was told they are constant maintenance from being so cheaply made. This made me pause before looking into getting one.

We've been campers my entire life. Some of the best memories that I have as a kid come from those weekends. I strongly suggest that you do some shopping around for used. As stated earlier, they're all made crappy and the resale is terrible. Sooooo many ppl get a little to anxious and buy brand new and never use it. After a yr or so they're selling it for thousands less. With young kids and a job plz take my advice and get yourself a regular length bumper pull. You'll learn quickly that loading and hauling a big arse fweel is a complete pain in the arse. Use this moto and you'll be alright, "If the camper gets to cramped it's time to sell the sob". I'm saying that if your wife and kids butch about space then they're spending to much time in the camper. All that should be done inside is showering and sleeping. Camping at Chicot Park (very close to home) is like bringing my kids to Disney World.

Please don't park it in your driveway or where it is visible to your neighbors, unless you already live in a trailer park.

If you do, most of them will hate your guts.

Part of the cost of responsible ownership is having or renting a place to park it where it is not an eyesore.

As opposed to the hassle of towing, burning more fuel, setting everything up, breaking it all back down, and having the clean the camper when you get home??

I'm not saying camping isn't more fun for a lot of people, but saying it's not a hassle is bullshite.

I just sold one after 2 years and it's just not feasible for short stays unless you are specifically targeting campgrounds, and then I would just get a cabin

Like said before, doesn't matter how much they cost. I have friends with near $300k motorhomes that after just about every trip need to go in for something. There is a reason they call them "land yachts".

I have had a bumper pull for the past 6 years. We are a family of six and love it. We typically just go 1 mile down the street to fontainbleau about 5 times a year and to Disney once a year. It has been the best experience investment of my life. I have done a lot of research on the brands when buying and have never had any issues with any of my 3. I wash and clean it every time we get back and perform routine maintenance as required.
You won't regret the memories you make with your kids if you have the opportunity to use it!

Carefully read DownSouthDave's post 3 times. Good info there.

If you absolutely, positively have to try one of these money pits - find a clean, used one. Do a little research and find out how quickly these things depreciate.

3 of my neighbors have tagalongs that are rarely used.

Several neighbors have gotten motor homes over the years. The first year they used them 3-5 times for maybe football games or a family vacation. Since then I have seen the RVs leave the driveway maybe twice a year and a few not at all. Of course, if the power goes out, I've seen them being used during the outages if the outage is longer than a day or so.

I always leave body fluids in any room I get at any level hotel. It's the norm for me to spray my DNA.....

Not always the case. Look at Casita's. They hold their value very well and are very well made. The Oliver is another one. But yea, most of this huge toy haulers, etc are POS's.

Death, when we are fully retired we're going to do the same thing. I plan on going 5th wheel for mine for just those reasons.

Our plan is to move to our small house at St Augustine Beach and sell our other house in Orlando use the proceeds to buy our rig.

I'm with you, I hate hotels. They're disgusting for the most part.

My parents do.
They started with a little tow camper and have slowly upgraded over the years. They now drive a large one (don't know how many feet but one of the larger ones).

It's usually best to buy used if you are looking for value as they are often hard to sell and depreciate quickly after rolling out the lot. Diesel motorhomes hold better value than the gas ones.

My parents take it nearly everywhere and had considered selling their house and living on the road for the year .

But part of the reason is that my dad's company pays for most of the RV use. Instead of flying my dad to locations, paying for hotel, etc , they just pay an allowance + some to have him take the RV across the countrym

I perosnally prefer a trailer over an RV. For starters, if you like staying at the campground more than just a weekend it's nice to have a truck to go out to the store or go get some firewood or something

Many RVs tow a secondary vehicle anyway. Most just a small crossover , but my dad actually tows his f150(to take work sites).

What size/class are you looking at?

I know some folks who have a 30ish foot Class C on a Duramax Express chassis. They go somewhere almost every weekend and sometimes tow their other vehicle with them. They claim it's fairly easy to drive.

I know the big pushers can get up there in price and eat up a lot of parking. One of my neighbors has one and I think it's just too much unless you are retired and have time to use it. Watching them try to park that thing is fun. It's basically a bus.

in my experience, all RVs are pretty high maintenance rigs.

everything in them is lightly made to keep the overall weight down....unfortunately, that generally equates to a lack of durability.
