I'd love to spend my summer working a sailboat ... an honest to god Sailboat. Learning to work the ropes, relearning all of the nautical shite I forgot from Boy Scouts, spending the nights seeing the stars in all their glory, catching a great wind and hauling arse, fighting through a squall and laughing about it at the next port of call ... hell yeah.

Anyone know where I can sign up for something like this?

Probably not too many jobs on sailboats like that, more motoryachts/fishing boats.

A neighbor of mine did that for a decade after his divorce. He saved enough to retire.

I know another guy down the way from me that lives in a sailboat now. He's a single, older, off-the-grid type that paints for cash. He has a lot of freedom. It's not for everyone; but some mornings I'm jealous of them when I have to go to work...

I wouldn't mind it if it was parked in the yard. In the water without being able to garden, walk through the woods, etc...no thanks.

I did for a year.

Pros - cheaper (rent)/utilties covered, doesn't require many furnishings, easy to clean.
Cons - it can get cramped at times, privacy issues, hardly any natural light in the bedroom, you're limited on what you can cook.

My dad (75) sold his house, 5th-wheel, second truck, and 40 acre hunting camp and built a bad arse 2 bedroom 1 full bath, kitchen, living room, wrap around porch houseboat and has been living in it for 3 years now. He loves it and we love visiting him and staying out in the bayou.

I have been looking at them in Texas. I can get a decent one for around 45-50k. With all the time I will be spending on the rig renting a 1500$ apartment or house just seems stupid for 1 week out of the month. With this route it would feel more like a vacation when off. Looking at lake travis or conroe

Used to stay on my boat at the marina from time to time. Its peaceful but the only problem is bugs. Boats tend to attract bugs that like dark damp places. I would always find cockroaches and spiders on my boat and it would stress me out while I slept.

Young relative of mine and her husband bought a nice sailboat and sailed from Lake Pontch to Cuba, then to Mexico, Central America, Columbia, and wound up eventually in the San Blas Islands near Panama. Spear fishing for dinner was pretty cool. They would post pictures on their blog and we communicated by e-mail. After several years they split up, sold the boat, and are now working back in the States (but separated for now).

They seemed like the perfect couple but I suppose living together that long in tight quarters can become challenging after awhile. People need space and that is very limited on a single hull sailboat. A large catamaran seems the only viable option.

I lived on a 33' foot Ranger for some time back when I was young and single. I loved everything about it to be frank. I did not have a lot of space but really did not need much. I installed a water heater, A/C, small fridge and microwave and pulled out the old alcohol stove. One of the great things about being a live-aboard is that you can keep the boat in top condition because you are always there. It is also VERY inexpensive as electric ran around $30 a month and I think my slip fee was $130.

The biggest pro is that you will NEVER get turned down by a woman when you ask her to go for a booze cruz. It's how I married way up.

There was a documentary about a girl that lived in a houseboat on the atchafalya. Too many snakes for me.
