No, but my wife retires next year, and I expect will do this very thing. We have cousins who do this once a year for a week, literally get in the car and take off. Always seem to have a good time.

The ex and I went to France and intentionally made reservations for only the first night. After that, it was an adventure to find a place each night. Also did a jaunt through the Rockies with ZERO reservations and improvised as I went along. Wound up staying in some really cool places. Looking back, those trips were the most fun I ever had. Highly recommend it!

Did it when I was much younger. Found myself single and laid off from a job and just packed some clothes, got on my motorcycle and headed west. Lasted about two months.

Yeah, I have. Packed up the truck with a friend of mine and went mountain hopping in Colorado/Wyoming. Only expenses were gas and canned food. Pitched a tent in a different area or different mountain every night. Went fly fishing, mountain biking, white water rafting (for free, knew a guide up there). One of the coolest spots was the Huckleberry hot springs north of Jackson Hole. Stayed there for two days.

We've gone twice. We knew we were heading to CO/Utah/Wyoming area but never had a real plan. About 15 days each trip.

This is what happens when you have no direction or responsibility in your life after 22.

Grow up dude. Get a real life, get a real job, get a real woman, and settle down for the long haul.

So what you're saying is a real life is one you spend working all the time. Your only life...the only one you get...forever.

You got the wanderlust son,
It's the same old story,
Of young men uncounted,
Since we smelled that salt air,

And there ain't a damn cure,
So get ambulatory,
And strike out for fortune,
Feel the wind in your hair,

Put all you care to carry,
Inside of a rucksack,
A good coat on your shoulders,
And a new pair of shoes,

Then pick a direction,
And don't you ever look back,
It's the only solution,
For those wanderlust blues,

Take a berth on a schooner,
Stow away on a train,
Don't stay anywhere too long,
Keep moving your feet,

Spend your nights in some tavern,
Or sleep out in the rain,
Buy the booze and steal kisses,
And taste freedom so sweet,

And when wand'rin' gets tiring,
Find a good place to land,
Grab a good honest woman,
And make her your wife,

Raise a house and a family,
The best that you can,
So your last words can be,
"Man, I've lived a good life."

Id suggest hiking the Appalachian across states but that poses a problem for your truck.

Threads like this reaffirm that Jones and I's plan (as of now) for no children isn't the massive mistake people try to convince us it is.

Next summer I'm going to throw the kids in the car and head west with no plan. I'll be back before school starts again. Educational field trip.

I didn't suggest it for myself

I know a few people who have done it and love it. If I WAS outdoorsy, it seems cool.

the source of problems
here it lies
when a woman speaks
the world it cries

all men's woes
and all their strife
start when they invite
a women in their life

they're powerless
soon they learn
for a new direction
they always yearn

so you give and give
and they always take
until your mind and heart
completely break
