Any Coin Collectors Here?

I found a V nickel from 1909 today. It is only worth a few bucks, but I think it's cool and would like it to be shinier.
I'm not an avid collector at all; other than a little jar of wheat pennies. There is disagreement online on how to clean old coins. Any advice?

I have a few coins from 1950 abs earlier- I haven't looked at them in awhile. I think I have a few buffalo nickels. Not really a collector

I'm not an avid collector but I keep all the old coins older than my grandparents

The honest answer is dont clean it. Most collectors want the age to show. Those old coins look better with the black silver contrast.
However... if you dont give a damn about that and you dont care about ruining a collectable coin...
Baking soda, a little water and a toothbrush after soaking it in lemonjuice overnight.

What's up OKB?
I am not a coin collector, but when my grandpa passed away we found a bunch of money he collected when he was in WWII. It wasn't worth much, I think he had a bill that isn't even a currency anymore, but he had coins from all over. It was pretty cool to look at.
Also, a guy who use to be good friends with my dad use to go all over with a metal detector and over the years he had found all sorts of coins. He use to bring them over from time to time to show my dad.. The confederacy had its own coins right? If I am not mistaking, he found one of those.. Or one that was associated with the Civil War.

I'm an avid coin collector, but my kid keeps taking them out of the jar under the sink.

Get some muriatic acid for swimmings pools. You wont even recognize the coin it cleans so well!

Cleaning coins ruins collectibility.

This is what I was afraid of. I read that toothpaste/brush was a no-no and then some say it would be fine.
For now I'm soaking it in warm soapy water and will use a soft cloth to clean and dry it.

For goodness sake don't clean it. The patina gives it value; and character. If you want a shiny nickel buy one on eBay.

Don't clean it.
1909 penny would have been much better.

jrodLSUke, Kajungee- Thanks. I took it out of the soapy water. I won't try to clean it anymore. It is in really good condition already
It was fun to show it to our little boy and imagine about the people who used this nickel over a hundred years ago.
