My best friends dad is. Feel bad for the guy. He was bummed about the legacy thing too. Worst part is his kid just flunked out and is coming back to Florida. Sunk 2 years of out of state tuition and living costs for her. I think I'll go buy him a drink.

My oldest daughter will be attending the local community college in August 2016. I'm not paying for her to go to a 4 yr college, much less pay LSU's out of state fees.

LSU really screwed up when they discontinued the Legacy Program.

Unless they qualify for scholarships it's a waste of money

People complain about millennials being entitled, yet they pay full tuition for their kids.

What, my dad and his brothers college tuition (Purdue) undergrad was paid by my grandfather...my grandfather was not a wealthy man.

My father paid for me and my sisters undergrad degrees...I plan on doing the same for both of my daughters (of course, I have made it clear to them it will be a mile down the road from our house to the campus of University of Kentucky.

Not paying your kid's way though school is about as trashy as it gets.

What does it take for an out of state kid to become a resident?

Its pretty difficult for a kid to establish residency once entered into college.

The way to get it waived is through a high enough ACT score before applying. That's what I did.

What about a Tier 1 research institution?

I have told my junior that I will pay for him to go to LSU if he can get out of state waived. He can go to a Texas (in state) school of equal or greater "ranking" for far less. I would pay the crazy $$ to send him to a top ten school for the same reasons stated in that thread from earlier in the week on the topic. But once you're past whatever cutoff makes sense to you - ivy, top ten, etc... there are very few times I can think of where paying out of state to a public school makes sense.

For you all interested in the cut offs - here's the deal: LSU Auto Schollys

LSU Cost Estimates:

IN OUT of State
Tuition & Fees $8,758 $26,476
Housing $6,120 $6,120
Meal Plan $4,186 $4,186
Books & Sup $1,500 $1,500
TOTAL $20,564 $38,282

Formatting sucks - Heres the link

Problem is - that 28 still has you paying $10k more than in state tuition. Hard to swallow - and my boy's been wearing purple and gold in this burnt orange part of the world since the day he was born.
