People blame "common core" when all that is, is a set of standards to follow.

You only have a small window in the evening where their brains even work, so you generally have to adjust your schedule. Meant cooking specifically for our son, feeding him...then prepping dinner for ourselves then setting it aside to do homework with him. One person cooks and the other puts him in the bath...eat while he watches TV, then one of us reads to him while the other cleans. It's a chore, but it doesn't last long. Now it's who does homework early, brings him to soccer, then sits with him to read.

Is it possible that some private schools might give more homework to give parents the impression they are getting the education they are paying for? Of course, I don't know if the people saying their kid has a lot of homework are sending their kids to public or private but.. its just something that came to mind.

Probably not... a lot of public schools send homework home to reinforce what is learned in the classroom. However, if a kid did not understand it then they struggle and out of 20-30 kids you will have some who do not understand.

Then it becomes the teachers fault because all parents know their child should be a straight A student so the teacher must not have taught it.

I feel for teachers because more and more is being asked of them and a lot of time it takes away from instruction time. Then the children suffer because schools and districts need "data" in order to place children. T

Hell the kids get home at 6pm, eat dinner, do homework, then its time to take a bath and get to bed for 8.

Any teacher sending homework home for a first grader is highly suspect. Instill the willingness to learn, kids will do educational things on their own.

People talk about the Finnish model a bit, but their educational time is a lot less than ours, they substitute recreation for class time and get much better results.

quote:

For others, they are surprised to hear that in Finland children don't start school until they are 7 years old. They have less homework than their peers in other countries. A child's socioeconomic background is less of an impediment to academic performance. And there is only one standardized test, which is administered in the final year of high school.

quote:

Finally, play constitutes a significant part of individual growth and learning in Finnish schools. Every class must be followed by a 15-minute recess break so children can spend time outside on their own activities. Schooldays are also shorter in Finland than in the United States, and primary schools keep the homework load to a minimum so students have time for their own hobbies and friends when school is over.

The difference is pronounced in America, where a national poll of elementary school principals found that up to 40% of U.S. school districts have reduced or eliminated recess in order to free more time for core academics, and one in four elementary schools no longer provides recess to all grades.

Pushing primary kids has shown to be a failure. They burn out on education and will not increase their learning aptitude.

Last year my son was in first grade. His math homework at one point included problems like 3+_=8, where he is supposed to answer the blank. This is basic algebra solving for x type stuff....in first grade.

Are you saying your kid is too stupid to learn this?

I don't understand your point.

Lay out 8 sticks on a table. Shown your son if you counts to three, how many are left.

What's your problem with that?

First grade is too early to teach children math?

No wonder this country is fricked

What school? Is it a magnet school? My daughter did the same amount when she was in 1st grade. My boys went to another school and last year they had none in the 2nd grade, other than the occasional study guide. I can see benefits to both. Daughter tested in the 95th percentile going into 6th grade but my boys are testing well without all the homework.

It takes a village to raise a child. I have all the children in school

I remember always having homework and workbooks and my parents helping me because they were good parents.

This was a yes or no. Resorting to stories about when you were a child leads me to no.

Finland doesn't have homework and they test better than the rest of the world. Elementary school should be homework free.

My school was the opposite, I had a shite ton of homework in elementary school, it lessened in middle school, and then when I was in high school I didn't have homework one day from freshman year to senior year
