Am I running/hiking/walking incorrectly???

Recently I've been watching my weight and working on improving my general health. I've lost a little over 70 pounds thus far. This has been a multifaceted approach: eating healthy (mostly), working out in the gym, becoming more active, and lots of walking/running.
Here's the purpose of the thread:
I've noticed that my big toe lifts up to the top of my shoe when I walk and run. In fact, I've even worn holes just above my big toe in a couple of older shoes. Anytime I go for a run I always have problems with shin splints; this has been a problem for some time; I had originally thought that it was a learning curve that I just had to work through but this has been a number of months now though. Am I running "wrong," is the lifting of the toe an indication of improper technique? I used to run cross country in high school (nearly two decades ago) and I don't remember having such problems with my shins or remember noticing the lifting of my toes either.
I've tried several different shoes: Asics, Merrell, Rebock, New Balance. I've been considering trying Altra shoes so if anyone has any suggestions for that then I'll more than welcome them.

Shin splints can come from tight calves. Roll them, stretch them and make sure to not increase distance or speed too quickly.
Good luck!

Governor Christie, don't take seriously any of the other things we might have said here...

And I must lift my toe as well as two pair of my shoes have holes near the big toe area. I have no shin splints.

My Dr said running is for show outs, walking at a brisk pace is better.
I used to run , now I walk

Also you mention older shoes .. Running shoes have a "shelf life". Maybe they have too many miles??

You likely need a running/gait analysis by a DPT or MD that specializes in this.

Just cut it off. Added benefit of less weight.

First off, tremendous accomplishment on the weight lost.
Second, if you've done all this walking/running/hiking work to get you to lose all these pounds, then I don't think there's anything wrong with the way you are doing it.
What I might suggest is trying different brands of shoes, and maybe moreso different ways to tighten your shoe/boot around your foot. This may correct those wear issues.

I run on my toes and so I'm always wearing through the toebox.

Have you been to a store like Tri-Running to get custom fitted?

Where are you located?

Varsity is great as well.

Never went to Varsity sports in BR while I lived there, but have been to the one in Mandeville. They are very helpful. I'm not big on getting "fitted" for shoes in the sense that they can look at you run and find some magic fit. I think some people need a stability shoe, but that's a easy problem to fix and you don't need a pro eye to see it. Otherwise its about what you are comfortable with and you may not know that until you have a few 100 miles on the shoes. The guys at Varsity actually talked to me for like 30 minutes about the kind of running I do and technique and stuff. Gave me websites to check out and all kinds of things. I'd recommend. They suggested shoes based off my goals, and never once did a gait analysis (which I already knew I was a neutral runner from other stores).

Roll stretch and I'd advise going to a running store and maybe having a proper fit done if you haven't before. Maybe have them check your gait ?

I think the great thing about these stores though is that you have 30 days typically to return a pair of shoes that doesn't work. I bought a pair of Mizzunos (Geaux Run in Lafayette) and after 2 weeks HATED them. Actually after ONE week I hated them but thought maybe another week would help. I've been told that you shouldn't really have to break shoes in.
I tried to exchange them and the store encouraged me to give it the full 30 days .. I'd had some other injuries and thought ok well. But on day 30, I went in, gave them my pretty Mizzunos and left with On Clouds and am now on my 3rd pair.
IDK if Academy, Dick's, etc let you do that. They may -- I just don't buy my shoes there.
