Actually the most significant impact of the '60s would take place in the '70s and later -- the takeover of academia by the PC cultural stalinists.

It was in the 1960's when we saw America live up to its promise of equality for all.
It was a time of change on many other fronts, as mentioned in the OP. Try to imagine if you were in your 40's when this was happening. You would have lived through the depression, was probably drafted into ww2, used the gi bill to get an education and home with 2.5 kids. this person knew nothing but hard work and sacrifice all of his life. Imagine what they thought of the hippy movement, draft dodgers, counterculture figures, recreational drug use, 60's music, breaking of social norms, the changing racial hierarchy. It probably was overwhelming and they resented the baby boomers. I would think they saw them as spoiled brats who were wasting the sacrifice his generation made.
Overall, I'd say it was a positive time. I just thought I'd point out that positive change is sometimes hard for good people to accept.

What exactly was good about a society that systematically discriminated against the majority of its members (women, minorities, deviants, etc.)?

Things seemed all squeaky clean before the 60s because all the dirt was swept under the rug.

Jake, you might think what I'm about to tell you is trite pablum but you can take it for whatever you think it's worth.

Trying to explain what insights someone can gain from taking LSD to someone who has never taken LSD is, frankly, something you wouldn't understand and something I can't explain to you.

I will ask you if you truly feel grounded and at what time in your life did you realize that you were and what did you attribute that to.

There are always winners and losers. Some benefit, some lose out. Which side you're on will change the perspective. I was very young in the late 60's and remember it as an awesome time. My father, who had to go overseas during wartime probably views it a lot more differently than I.

I think the whole counterculture/revolution in social norms is good in the long run because it will eventually truly allow for equal rights for all, which wouldn't be possible without change. But in the short run (even today) bucking a bunch of social rules is difficult and causes a lot of suffering for a lot of people on both sides of the fence before everyone figures out a new social order that is actually stable. The the countries in Africa that gained independence are a good example. A lot of them are far worse off under the local dictator than they ever were under colonial rule. Some disastrously so.

The generation that won world war 2 was the greatest generation and their children were the worst.

So what insight did you gain? If it's explainable to yourself it can be explained to others.

Anyone who says no is either ignorant, misogynistic or racist. And no I'm not trolling or a super liberal, just a history teacher who studies this for a living.

That's a fair response. Taking LSD allowed me to see what reality truly is. It allows you to see right through BS reality. It's so easy to see through the BS life throws at you every single day and you're able to realize how things really are. I think that's what being grounded really means...being able to see things how they truly are.

I'd suggest talking to other people who experimented with drugs and grew up in the '60 and asking them to explain these questions you have. I think that would be really interesting for you to do that and let me know how that goes.

I don't need a temporarily mind altering substance to gain false insight into myself or life. I gain it by living and engaging with all manner and class of people.

Congratulations. Why harp on the issue?

He brought it up. I wanted an explanation. It's not harping. i'm just tired of the same amorphous, cliched answers i've heard from many others.

Jake, you make me laugh. How do you know the insight you gain from taking LSD is a false insight? I would think you'd have to take LSD and then you can decide for yourself. Who knows, you might be surprised. You see, I know you'll never do it so this whole dialog we've been having has been total bullshite.

To answer the OP, of course it was a positive for society. Anyone who doesn't recognize this is trolling, doesn't know WTF they're talking about, or is a hopeless reactionary.
