There is something about the idea of my daughter speaking English, Spanish, and mandarin is really cool. Even though she is two, she is fluent in Spanish and English for her age. My wife has never spoken a word of English to her and I've only spoken English. Her learning mandarin would be pretty awesome and I have to believe open up many doors in her career life. I just hope she is gifted in science like my wife, a scientist, is. All she'll get from dad is the gift of gab.

If you inquire at BRIS, find out specifically how much time is spent on Mandarin immersion. The program used to be just focused on French and Spanish immersion with English classes required also, and if you opted for Mandarin (an extra fee on top of regular tuition), they had pull out classes several times a week for 30 minutes or so. This may have changed in recent years, but the kids weren't fully immersed in Mandarin like they were in French or Spanish.

That doesn't mean she won't pick up the language, especially since she's bilingual, but it might not be what you think it is.

BTW, BR FLAIM II (a magnet school) does have a new Mandarin program on their Polk Elementary campus. Not the best neighborhood though.

One of the Runnels family just made a perfect score on her SAT and got a full ride to Georgia Tech. She went through the Runnels system before going to BRMHS for her last two years.

There is only one school in the entire state worth commuting to, and it is Jesuit.

Yes we have seen this one and it is among the highest rated schools iun the entire state. However, we don't live in EBR, so the magnet schools are out.

Georgia Tech

Impressive. I have no idea why, but I have very very specific dreams about my daughter going to study physics or really any engineering field at Georgia tech specifically.

So lets say she goes to BRIS for 8 years and during that time we move to EBR, which I doubt, how hard would it be for her to get into an EBR magnet high school?

The way things are set up right now (which may change in 10 years, who knows?), it would be difficult to get into Baton Rouge High coming straight from a private school. Magnet middle school students and siblings of current students have priority admission as long as they meet the required academic criteria. There are some kids from gifted programs and private schools who get in, but it's a lottery system and there usually aren't that many spots left. It's kind of like trying to get into St. Joseph's or Catholic High without going to a Catholic grammar school--it can be done, but there aren't that many people who make it.

Lee High's magnet program is in its 2nd year, so right now it may be easier to get into that school. But again, this may change in the next 10 years.

Not as uncommon as you think. Runnels has little to do with perfect SAT scores.

You don't have to be Catholic. But you have to attend mass so that may be uncomfortable.

When my daughter was about 3, we looked at the international school as well. We went and did their open house. When we left there that day...the wife and I both thought...neat concept...good education...weird people. I don't know what it was, but it just felt strange there.

My kids are at St. Jude now. We like it.

If you want your kid to be exceptional in Math and Science then BRIS is probably not your best plan.

I only have experience with St. George.

I was satisfied with the education and environment provided to my kid there.

I didn't think the school was lacking in any way whatsoever.

To get in, switch to St. George's parish and give at least $300 to the diocese every year. That will get you on the ISD (Identified Stewardship Donor) list. They go to the front of the line when it comes to getting into Catholic schools in BR.
