Fire dept pulled my breaker. Insurance has been called and claim as been made. Got all valuables out of the rooms that weee destroyed.
We are sitting in the playroom telling stories since no one could sleep.
Kids are excited about spending the summer at Mawmaws.
Good to hear.
And like everyone is saying, document and save receipts for everything!
Hopefully you get a level headed adjuster.
Strike up a conversation with him/her find some common ground. And the same for your contractor. Y'all all 3 need to be best friends and work together over the next few days, months or however long this takes.

Make sure you get your insurance carrier authorization to do water mitigation. Read the Reasonable Emergency Measures part of your Special Provisions endorsement and follow it

I’m in insurance and have dealt with this more than once.
Start inventorying all the damaged items while you still can. If you insurance is worth anything, they will pay for your hotel, meals in your hotel, and any extra expenses you incur within reason. Start looking for a rental property or an apartment to live in while your house is getting fixed. It should be comparable to where you currently live. The insurance company should pick up the tab.
I have the ability to write you a large check on the spot to cover those basic expenses at first so call your insurance agent and see if they can help.
Keep every receipt no matter how small.
Sorry you are going through this but your family is safe. Your house will be repaired and this will be a blip on the radar eventually.

If only adults were as resilient as kids. I'm glad to hear your family is safe.

Sorry this happened to you, man. Glad you and your family are safe. Saying a prayer for y’all.

Terribly sorry to hear about your loss, but thankful y’all aren’t hurt. Save important papers. Document and photograph your losses.

Sorry to hear this, at least you and the family are safe. We dealt with this after Ida, had to gut almost the entire house.
As others have said, take a ton of pictures of damaged areas and look for spots you may not realize immediately have damage. Try to mitigate further damages with tarps or temporary fixes as best you can. Get insurance on board immediately and hope an adjuster can get to you quickly, this was a major issue for many after Ida. If you can send your pictures to your agent he may ok you to start demoing any water damaged sheetrock and insulation which will lessen the amount of additional damage and mold.
Hopefully it works out well for you, it is a frustrating process for sure.

I’d highly recommend you hire a moving company to come and salvage what they can into a storage unit. Looters and thieves tend to come out when you’re not looking.

Great to hear your family is safe. The good news is you’ve come to the right place for advice because there’s a shite ton of posters here who have gone through multiple floods and hurricanes.

Where do you live?
Some nasty storms came through NELA last night.

Damn, that sucks, but good news is everyone is safe.

Pictures from every angle, inside and out. Close ups, including destroyed contents. Then protect from water intrusion/further damage. Submit claim if you haven’t already and get the ball rolling. If you’re talking with repair companies/contractors already, worth getting their licensing/insurance/W-9 before signing anything. Record everything destroyed and everything purchased as a result, get receipts. Best of luck.

Not sure how old your kids are, but you may want to see about them speaking to a counselor.
Don't do this, unless you're talking to a Christian councilor.
Otherwise you'll be looking at sex changes for your kids soon.

Salmon,
Sorry to hear of this loss.
Happy all are OK.
I hope you have a good homeowner’s policy agent and adjuster.
I had a house fire in ‘93 (1993 not 1893, ftr) and I was fortunate to have good actors in both roles.
Like you, in my house fire event I wasn’t a victim in a regional catastrophe, that made the entire process more easily accomplished.
(That was coming for me 12 years later…. )
Your homeowners policy may have a dislocation rider for you to live elsewhere as your residence is not habitable due to the casualty loss.
Also, your electrical service is interrupted, document the contents of your refrigerator & freezer(s) as that is usually covered under your policy.
As I understand it, you need to make a reasonable effort to protect the damaged portion of your residence as was alluded to earlier here.
Good luck moving forward, seasonally the timing could have been worse.
Hope the best for you moving forward.
PS: TulaneLSU is pretty sharp at 2:18 am.

Sorry to hear that, but glad everyone is safe. Don't have any advice that others haven't already offered. Good luck to y'all.

moved my family to front of the house when the winds picked up. It wasn’t a minute later that the tree fell and the entire back part of the house collapsed.
Props for the fantastic father’s intuition. That’s some God stuff right there.

Putman Restoration is a Shreveport company that does emergency repairs after a storm, fire, flood, etc. I’ve not used them, but they have a good reputation. They’ll likely be busy as hell with this whole region hit last night, so you may want to call them sooner rather than later. Your insurance agent may have other suggestions.

I was just out of my place for six months following a flood. Your policy will have separate coverage for living in a hotel. Use of this section will not take away from the policy limits that cover your repairs so use it.
Listen closely. Pick a hotel that is convenient and join the Points / Rewards for that hotel. Now that the repairs are all done, those points from the hotel are allowing us a two week vacation to Europe. It's a nice reward after the stress of the incident and being displaced. It may be hard to think of that now but you will thank me later.
