Just had our first baby and need a new SUV for the wife (no pics). She does not want a van/large SUV until kiddo #2, but we need space for our 2 dogs (110lbs total). Will probably need a luggage rack/hitch for road trips.

All my vehicles I've bought have been used with low mileage, but not opposed to new if it makes sense. Hard $50k limit, non OT baller status, but looking for more luxury than best bang for your buck.

Initial list:

X5 (currently has an X3 she likes but too small)
Mercedes GLS (tree fiddy or 450)
Lexus GX 460
Jeep GC (top trim level)
Telluride (might be too big, also it's a Kia)

I have 1 month of paternity leave left to do some research, test drives, etc., but wanted to get the OT's opinion on those vehicles or others to consider.

I love my 4Runner Limited with 3rd row that folds down in the trunk. If you're looking at the Lexus might as well check that out too.

eta: but for mom life, there are some annoyances, like no remote start, and you have to manually open the trunk which is just in this day and age. The entertainment system is meh. They might have fixed these issues by now, as mine is a 2019 model. Otherwise it's a great car

Not sure you will find any new midsized that aren’t bare trim for under $50k

Are you looking for 3rd row?

My opinion is you don't need an SUV for one kid, but it's okay to want one.

I'm partial to the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX in the luxury line. Also like the Toyota Highlander.

If you're going to get a van in a few years....just get a van now. As soon as you knock her up again you're going to want it.

My wife loves her Buick Enclave. I bought it 1 year old with 11K miles for under $30K.

$50k limit

Unless you just have so much money you don't know what to do with it why would you budget so much for a depreciating asset that you admittedly will only have until the next baby comes along?

Mazda CX-9. Drives well, has a ton of great features, looks good inside and out, and you can load it out and be at $40k.

Maintenance should be very reasonable as well. I believe Mazda won 2021 Brand of the Year for Consumer Reports as well.

We picked up a 2019 Lexus GX 460 with 30,000 miles on it for just under $40k. Added the extended warranty, with taxes, etc. was over $40K but way under $50K. Was a lease return, certified Lexus vehicle. Great vehicle, although, they've been slow to add all the bells and whistles like Apple Car play. Better price point than 4Runner with better appointments and ride. Highly recommend you check out for certified used GX 460.

We have one kid and the X3 works well for us but my wife and I aren’t the tallest of people so the car seat in the back fits fine.

My wife looked at both of these and Mercedes won out by a mile but the Lexus IS much closer to your budget.
