It's not considered to be a difficult technical climb. There are a few stretches that require some mountaineering skills. It is just so physically demanding, mainly due to the cold and lack of oxygen that makes it so difficult to reach the summit.

Question, is there a summit that is tougher? Like one that combines elevation, conditions and technical difficulty? Or is Everest considered to toughest on the planet.

Like, is there a summit that more people have died trying to climb?

If this subject interests you, read "Into Thin Air" by John Krakauer - he was part of the 1996 climb where Rob Hall died - then read "The Climb" by Anotolli Boukreev...

Yeah - there are several Himalayan peaks tougher than Everest. They used to say K2 was the worst but I think they've figured out a few routes that have tamed it somewhat. Everest is the tallest so it remains the grand prize.

Not sure if you'll find one with more but K-2 and Annapurna have higher fatality rates.

Wonder if you can pick up WWL from up there.

I found both those books very interesting. I used to have a very informative book about George Mallory who may have summited before Hillary. Mallory is one of the dead who is still on the mountain. I looked for that book just recently and can't find it.

I watched a show about the worlds most dangerous airports and theres one on Everest. If you don't hit it just right on the approach, your dead. There is no room for correction. It's crazy.

I saw that show and I had been to 3 out of 10 listed and I was like . St. Maarten, San Diego and Vail Eagle.

I was about to say Annpurna and K2. I think the fatality rate on Annapurna is over 50% maybe?

of all the ways to go it has to be up there with the best.

sincere question: did the Eskimos really put the old folks out on ice? do they still?

Climbers who die up there often would've chosen to be left up there in case of death.

There are stories about people that used dead climbers gear to survive. Pretty cool.

They are memorialized in a really cool memorial with metal plates at one of the base camps.

It's the Gilkey Memorial and it isn't at Everest. It's at K2 although I'm sure the Everest dead are memorialized in some way.

You can't just fly a helicopter up there to get them. The rescuers would have to be acclimatized to the altitude which is a slow process.

They knew when they climbed the mountain that if they died there it would be their final resting place. On K2 a lot of the bodies get found eventually and laid to rest because the glaciers slowly bring the bodies down he mountain and spit them out.

Not on the pedestrian routes but there are very difficult routes to climb Everest if one is so inclined.

1 in 5 die on Everest. Is it really worth it to risk a life for a dead one?? = NO

Helicopters cannot reach the elevations to do this not to mention some of these bodies are on slopes that are to steep.

Not even close to being accurate. It's much less than that.

Denali is much tougher than Everest. Not as many bodies because not near as many have attempted it. I don't believe it's ever had a solo winter ascent.
