re: We must accept it, Brees' contract is the true downfall of this team.

I've gone back and forth with the "Brees costs too much and hurts the team" thought.
Truth is, he makes what an elite player is worth and what the market pays. Taking out Brees salary, there is still $100+ million dollars of salary cap to be spent filling out the roster. Balancing more expensive veterans and finding cheap young talent from the draft with that available $100+ million dollars falls on the shoulders of the GM.
It is not on the player to accept a pay cut or take less money to make up for the ineptitude of his teams front office, that's stupid. What needs to be done is Benson needs to hold his employees accountable for the terrible decisions that have been made and ensure the mistakes that have put us in this mess are not repeated.

he could have easily ended up like Evans did
Or like how Nicks actually ended up. He has played in 9 games since he left New Orleans in 2012. Could you imagine paying Carl Nicks $10,000,000 this season? That is what he signed for with Tampa.
The cap situation could be worse... Could have Ndamukong Suh on the roster as a $20,000,000 a year DT with a cap hit of $28,000,000 next season.

To be fair, I doubt he would have caught MRSA in New Orleans since that was a Tampa issue.

Simply put, Drew needs to take a PAY CUT not restructure his contract but a PAY CUT before next season. His cap figure for this year and next are the highest in the league. He got his big contract when he demanded it. He is no longer worth it. He needs to take a pay cut to help his team.
The union would lose their minds if he did that. The Saints can cut him if they want to.

Phillip Rivers has like a 92 million contract and makes like 21+ million a year last I saw..
I have no idea the numbers but I remember something like that..
Any ways, my point is that if anyone has actually earned their pay it is Brees. You want to see how bad a team can look without an established QB.. look at the cleveland browns of late, oakland before this season, the jags, most teams that have had to try to draft a qb.. the colts got a once in a lifetime qb in Luck and he was a rarity.. but even he is turning the ball over at a ridiculous rate.
It makes it so much easier to win in the NFL consistently when you have an established and proven QB.
The true defining point to the Saints current struggles to me was Bounty Gate.
Up until Bounty gate, there wasn't a team in the entire NFL that had more wins than the Saints since Brees and Payton joined the Saints in 2006.
Think about that.. Not a single other team had more wins than the Saints.. The Saints were dominating elite competition too during that tenor..
Then Bounty gate happened, Sean was out a year, players suspended, and loss of draft picks.. we went through a really rough time losing.. Sean came back and we were mediocre.. but we have yet to truly recover.. I recognize you can't blame it all on that.. but that was the turning point IMO and developed us into more of a loser lol.. the drafting and free agent signings have been atrocious.. so I don't blame it all on Goodell..

Thats half of a two-part equation. When u write a check that large you better be drafting and developing like the packers and steelers.

It is an honor.
Look I stand by my statement, Drew Brees is the downfall of this team, he is out of his prime and is not worth the money anymore. We should have cut ties when the contract situation came up, I understand the giving him his dues etc etc etc, but that hasnt won us ball games, this is buisness and sometimes you have to sacrifice for the better of the TEAM. I love the Saints and have been a fan my whole life, but they are hard to believe in anymore.

why not follow some other greats and take a cut to help get some better talent in to win some games?!
This never happened. It's easy to just make shite up.
Players who you think Drew Brees has been worth less than in his time in New Orleans:
Aaron Rodgers
Russell Wilson
Ben Roethlisberger
Eli Manning
Philip Rivers
Cam Newton
Matt Ryan
Joe Flacco
All of these players have contracts that average more per year than Brees. Brees isn't even in the top 25% of the league for starting qb's in terms of salary.

That's great stick to your guns, but know this: You're a fricking moron.
Continue to discount the bad drafts, bad contracts and other frick ups the front office has made. Those are the real problems, but if you're not smart enough to get that and you need a scapegoat to pin this on go right ahead.

You said we should have let brees go, after arguably the best season of his career.
So what was your plan? Chase Daniel?

We dont have the run we had without Brees. He earned every fn penny of his contract for the role he played both on and off the field following that bitch katrina. Obviously others played their part but he was the face of the movement. Look at the draft picks and development of players as our downfall.

Loomis read your terrible thread

@FieldYates: Source: Saints created $2.6M in cap space by turning $5.2M of Drew Brees' base salary into a signing bonus. His cap hit for 2016 is now $30M

Anyone in their right mind KNEW this would eventually catch up to us. We'll never truly know if not signing him would have been the better move. We definitely would have regressed at the most important position on the field. However, we may not have at every other position.
There are a lot of guys that have been with the Saints over recent years that have been had to let go. They are doing well with their new teams.
Nature of the Beast.

I agree, those are some of the best posters on this forum, but why limit it to just 4?
