The lack of bodies from the missing picks hurt the organization for a while.
The Saints won their first ever playoff game one year later.
Ricky Williams ran for 1000 yards in 10 games that year.
And one year after that, the Saints sent him to Miami for two first round draft picks.

Pete Rozelle brokered the deal. He was the GM for the Rams before becoming commissioner.
Very interesting.
Fortunately for the Saints, the Rams picked Gary Beban with the pick. It was a big deal back in the day because the Commish got the Rams a sweetheart deal and they drafted the hometown Heisman Trophy winner out of UCLA. But that actually didn't work out and the Rams traded him to the Redskins before the season began.

An argument isnt even deserved to defend Ricky Williams as not being worst ever

After looking at your comment, it is technically incorrect. They got to look at the Rams info for their first draft and gave a second in the following year.
The Rams must have given a dummy list. I can't believe we had an elite NFL team's intelligence and we still drafted Les Kelley.

I saw an article a few years back, but have not been able to find it again.
It basically took all of the pics that were traded, selected the best player that was selected within ten spots of each pick, and then compared them as "would you rather have these players, or RW".
It appeared that getting Williams was the better move.

It definitely was, Ricky was great, our franchise just wasn't stable enough for his talent

I don't know about that. The Redskins used the Saints first round pick that year and traded back up and got Champ Bailey. And they got Lavar Arrington the next year.
And before you jump on me, I am not in the camp that says that Ricky was the worst draft ever.

We got champ too though

03 was real bad, but I wasn't in the world for those 60's drafts.
We had the 17th and 18th picks, and came away with Sullivan, who IMO (among most opinions) was the biggest bust in franchise history. Stinchcomb came early in the 2nd, but then it was complete garbage the rest of the way that year.
I remember thinking we were lucky to grab talmon Gardner in the 6th. Until tonight, that's the last time I have thought of talmon Gardner.

The Cardinals used those picks to pick Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace.
Johnson was hot garbage. For most of his career, Pace has been an average pass rusher with more talent than performance.
Plus, if we REALLY wanted a bad DT, we could have traded more picks to the Jets and picked Dwayne Robertson in the 2 spot.
That makes me feel a little better about picking Sullivan.

1979 - "and with their first round pick the New Orleans saints select Russell Erxleben, KICKER, from the University of Texas.
Reggie mathis
Jim Kovach
Harlan Huckleby
Ricky Ray
Stan Sytsma
Doug Panfil
David Hall
Kelsey Finch
Round out that stellar year. Talk about getting nothing with your first round selection.

I had considered listing 1979, but Doc Kovach was a very good MLB during the Bum Phillips years.
Harlan Huckleby never played for the Saints but started briefly in Green Bay. Ricky Ray played occasionally for the Saints but was not a good player.
But you're right. 1979 is top ten worst all time. Possibly top 5.
