The Saints are losing 4.5 million in cap space.

The New Orleans Saints just lost a chunk of salary cap space and it had nothing to do with signing a free agent, acquiring a new player or extending someone’s contract. On Monday, the league accounted for repayment of cap space loans given to multiple NFL teams at the onset of the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) during the 2011 offseason. Due to the murky waters surrounding the uncapped season and new terms in the CBA, the NFL allowed teams to borrow up to $3 million towards their 2011 cap and another $1.5 million towards their 2012 cap. The Saints took both loans up to the maximum amount, $4.5 million total.
No, the Saints didn’t do this because they were broke. It appears only 9 of the 32 NFL clubs did not take out some sort of cap space loan over the course of the 2011 and 2012 offseasons.
The reconciliation shrunk the Saints 2017 space, per the NFLPA, from $12,710,725 on Monday to $8,210,725 on Tuesday’s report.

Ouch. That sucks. At least it was taken in a year in which our cap space isn't hovering around $1M-$2M.

We were already fricked for this once
It's bullshite
Unless this was unrelated, but I don't think it is.

. As a result, not only do they lose this money, but every NFL team other than Oakland and New Orleans gets an additional $1.6 million in cap room. (The Saints and Raiders aren't docked any cap room, they just don't get to share in what the Redskins and Cowboys have to give back.)

How much cap space is usually taken up by draft picks? Just trying to get a idea what we can actually do going after other FA.

Pretty sure we will be fine with draft picks because we will get some added cap space with Byrd being a post June 1st cut

Always. Batshit 3d anal rape chess.

How does this come out now and not prior to FA? Fortunately we're not in terrible shape but what if we were 5M worse off?
Posted on 3/28/17 at 12:22 pm to St Augustine
I'm sure the Saints knew.

ok, so that is the most likely reason the restructured contracts to free up some extra money.
since it said only 9 teams didnt take the same loans, we aren't really any worse off by comparison to most other teams I guess

I'm no cap expert but is this a big enough of a hit that it could be holding up or making reaching a final number for Butler more difficult?

Lofty sig pic, mate. So happy to be MAGA with my longtime Saints and Pellie pal whodatfan

nope, it wont affect much of anything there, we have plenty of room left for butler plus all the draft picks, we may not even use up all of it.
when teams sign players to like $10 million a year contracts it never seams to effect cap space more then half that because they do some "things" with how they get paid to spread out the money specifically to avoid a big effect on cap money.
I don't know the specifics, but there are lots of ways to pay them that don't count against the cap.
so the full yearly contract number you here about, doesn't mean that is the amount that comes directly out of cap money you have left

According to one site the picks are slotted so based on the picks and where they are at the following is the numbers.
#11 $2,781,261

#42 $1,131,292
#76 $680,033
#103 $640,650
#196 $502,375
#229 $486,036
-------------------------------
Total $7,882,660

Saints can just backload the contract, put a low 1st year salary, and then a signing bonus spread out over 4 years.
The first year of these contract is almost never a big hit.

But that doesn't take into account the top 52/55 rule
We really need $3-4 million to sign them I believe, but I'll have to look it up later. It is on overthecap

Well if they are paid it, it will count against the cap. It can just be spread out via the length of the contract if used as a signing bonus
Or, what the saints have done lately is have players sign a 3 year deal that automatically voids after 2, so that the hit gets spread out an extra year
Pretty creative

all part of the saints are waiting to give butler the green light to sign tender.

And I'm sure they were aware they were peaking in 11-12 and they needed to get the pieces to win NOW.
Unfortunately, they were horrible pieces.
