Why the hell is this thread being posted week 5 of the 2011 season??? Can't we worry about contracts and transactions during the offseason after we finish this season in February?

A friend of mine said he had the surgery Colston had. My friend no longer plays sports - he doesn't run. He said that's why he didn't draft him in fantasy. Thoughts?

Your friend isn't Marques Colston. Judging from the game vs Carolina, Colston is still our best wide receiver even when not 100%. There is a reason why your friend isn't a professional football player.

If Brees wants Colston, he'll be back. I think continuity is important to Brees. Colston is still solid.

I don't see how Brees doesn't pitch a hissy fit if the Saints don't resign Colston without a like replacement in mind. Having that big target and fairly good set of hands is a luxury that might not be missed until it's actually gone. Having two big bodies on the field to throw to is a real security blanket.

to be fair, drew could easily be the vehicle that leads to the saints re-signing colston, but he's kind of being a cock about his new contract. if brees wants $20M/year-type money, we're going to have to trim a lot of fat on our OL and WR corps

*ETA: probably RBs also

For us to jump to conclusions about how Brees is "being" about his contract negotiations is silly. He could just as easily be an angel and not want to distract himself and his team with negotiations during the season. He'll get paid. What are the Saints going to do, not pay him? Yeah right.

i think a report came out a week or 2 ago about the negotiations that are going on right now

that's not what i meant

what i'm saying is that brees better not get a super deal then "throw a hissy fit" about the saints having to cut some fat/luxuries

it will be ridiculous if we sign brees to a big deal and then colston a "reward" contract like we gave harper

we'll probably have to pass on nicks/porter and cut thomas to even start dreaming about that. will smith may be on the chopping block, too

Yeah, I know negotiations are ongoing. But you made it sound like he's being a butthole about it. I was just saying that it's easy to draw conclusions, so I he could just as easily be acting all easy come easy go, it'll happen when it happens. I don't peg Drew for a guy that would let something like that get in the way of the season's success.

I see what you mean. If Smith goes, fine. I'd hate to see Porter leave because you can never have too much talent on defense. It'll be interesting to see what happens to say the least.

Did Harper get a deal?

i don't either

but we're talking bout a hypothetical "hissy fit" he'll throw if we don't pay his offensive toys. if we can't afford them, then it's on drew. he can't have it both ways (huge deal + money for WRs, RBs, etc)

that's all i'm saying

harper probably got twice what he was worth on the open market...at least 33% more

I read you. That will be pretty interesting. Even if he doesn't get Colston, he's not really regressing and he can make anybody famous. He's kept Devery Henderson collecting a paycheck and I think the only othe QB that could do that would be Tom Brady.

I blame San Diego for that. WAAAAAAAAY overpaid their FS. Forgot his name.

yeah twice is too much. $5-6M seems about right for a SS who is 1-dimensinoal (but REALLY good in that dimension)

weddle got PAID, but he's a FS (more valuable)

If he wants another ring I can see him taking a pay cut as long as Brees is playing.

Colston will want to get paid most he can.

Drew wants and deserves to get paid. If peyton is worth 23 million on IR, then Drew should get paid about 32 million a year.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. Season still very early though. He does make a lot of cash.

My son Kolston (1 yrs old) will be upset if Colston is no longer a Saint next year!

I agree that the hometown discount wont exist on this issue. Colston knows his body is deteriorating and will want to get paid.

we need to keep colston but I wouldn't mind us drafting a wr in r3 to add to the explosiveness in the same way green bay drafted jordy nelson and randall cobb when they were stacked....

we need to keep strengthening our strengths.
