Just a bandwagoner

Everyone keeps pointing out we need a OLB pass rusher but we truly could have one of the best already, For CHEAP
I've been yelling this at everyone saying pass rusher is our top need. Pass rusher was our top need in the 4-3 because Galette and Tez weren't every down DE's. Now in the 3-4, we have 2 young speed guys coming off the edge, with 2 young, strong, explosive guys playing DE. It completely changes everything.

Seriously.
I think we need help in the secondary or NT more than anything
Exactly, and potentially LT.

I think we need serious competition at the OLB spot this off season with a combo of young drafties, quys already on the roster and fairly cheap FA's..

agreed...a motivated rotation is a must. I'd really like to see Phillips come in. Plus he's a charger.

But why is competition at OLB more of a need than say NT? We only have one NT, and I'm not even sure the guy is a NT. Why is it more of a need than safety, where we have 2 starters who pretty much suck? Why is everyone so quick to point out that Harper is a great fit for the new defense, but then say we must upgrade at OLB even though we have 2 young guys being moved to that position who are a big reason the team is making the switch? I agree we need depth, but I don't think we need upgrades at that position and I don't think it's more of a need than a couple other positions.

Because with a good offense and passing game you really only need an average defense who can occasionally get pressure. You're not going to be stacked at all positions. Especially with a 20 M dollar qb. If you get a lead and can hit the passer you will win a lot.

Really pushing it today, "St Augustine."

All eleven are important. I base most of my knowledge on the 3-4 of Sidwell when he ran it for us in the 80's era of the dome patrol. Strong up the middle with Mills and Waymer and strong at the ends. We were never dominate at NT.
But we were strongest at OLB for 8 years or so.

Payton did say our only musts are at LT and backup QB, so I expect them to try to sign Bushrod, or as rumored Long, before the draft(if not #15 will likely be LT). It's possible if Chase doesn't come back we may take a QB in the middle rounds.
He mentioned de, olb, and te as needs(definitely pointing to Smith being released if he doesn't restructure). It's possible we use a combination of the draft and free agency(using second tier players as he said; so no "James Harrison"s unless they come cheap) to fill those.
So I guess they must like our guys for nose tackle, which likely points to hicks staying in the middle and them being comfortable with Bunkley.
And he didn't bring up secondary players so that tells me he fells confident, as do I, about going back to a man scheme with the ss in the box.
Jenkins is the only starter I feel has been inconsistent in both man and zone schemes and we have IAQ who did well last year should Jenkins continue to struggle.
Both Greer and Robinson are man corners(had we kept Porter I fell he could have adjusted well to zone) and they just didn't fit Spags scheme and seemed unwilling or unable to pick it up(though that could be said about everyone in the secondary except for IAQ). They will be fine going right back to man under Ryan.

I think it would be a mistake to play Hicks in the middle. Not that he can't do it, I just think it would be a waste of his skills.
Posted on 3/9/13 at 5:18 pm to landrywasbeast30
Not really. Ryan doesn't run the spacing eating d-linemen 3-4. Look at Ratliff. Hicks would actually be the perfect nose for his scheme.
But I could also see a case where he would rotate between inside and outside. I didn't mean to imply he would just be a nose tackle. I just meant the Payton doesn't see it as a must or a need(though he could have just not mentioned it) so outside of Bunkley who could play nose? Hicks.

I still think you need to go pass rusher with the first pick. You have Galette and Wilson yes, but who else on your entire roster fits that mold? No one. I'd like to get another guy that would allow us to be even more flexible in the front 7.
Imagine on passing downs sliding Wilson to ILB (where he played in college anyway) and having a Jones/Mingo and Galette combo rushing the passer. That would be pretty damn sweet.

We need a play maker in the secondary. I think the Saints may take a look at Brandon Williams NT from Missouri Southern.

Enter Ed Reed.
You know they're going to pick up another DB in the draft as well.
