Raiders are trending up. Got some nice additions on offense. Mack is a monster on D. But in a pass happy league that secondary is about to get abused. 38 year old safety? It's bad. They build on that and they'll be a serious contender in a year or so.

Derek Carr was a great get for them. Just like Bortles at Jacksonville. Hundley, Grayson, and Mettenberger are the next big steals for teams looking for a future QB. Also Connor Cook at Mich St.

I like the Grayson addition. Saints have to add some targets for the QBs. I like Cooks. But after Colson leaves, there are serious holes.

And that defense doe.

He struggled but that Minnesota defense he went up against is legit. He had a pick that would have been an easy completion to Mike Evans had he not stared him down, drawing the over the top safety from across the field.

What is scary about Winston is that in the post game presser he did a good job of breaking down his mistakes. He might be a dumbass off the field but he appears to be advanced in his football knowledge.

He's going to have his share of both good plays & bad plays as a rookie. It's once he gets to years 3-4 is where he probably become a major pain in the arse in the division on the field.

As of right now Carr > Bortles. That's in part to playing in both a spread & pro style system at Fresno St. He came into the league with the understanding of how to operate a pro style offense as well as understanding the vertical passing concepts that go along with a spread offense scheme. He also is mobile with a cannon for an arm & a quick release that is on par with Aaron Rodgers.

...Is what I had heard about him, and is what scares me about him. At the risk of dating myself, he always reminded me of ALVIN MACK from THE PROGRAM.

the Bucs have some good weapons on offense but their O-line isn't very good. They have a few players on defense who have All-Pro talent though.

Don't really know about the Raiders. They were 3-13 last year yet somehow are a team on the rise all of a sudden? People seem to be fascinated by them and I don't really get that. I think they can be a lot better in a few more years but just not seeing it this year. They have drafted well the last couple of years though.

Cleveland might be another team worth mentioning. Not a lot to get fired up about as far as offensive weapons.

49ers lost a lot on defense and 2 starters on O-line plus Frank Gore. Sucks to be them.

Like a rookie QB that wasn't used to the overall speed of NFL defenses.

He and MM threw the same # of interceptions, but MM looked way better overall.

It's because of the upside Derek Carr has along with the new weapons they have at receiver. Do I think they contend for a Wild Card? No, but they will be much better than they have in the past. They still have holes but they won't be an automatic win anymore either.

Pro Football Focus ?@PFF
Derek Carr was one of three QBs (Brees & Rivers) without an INT on play action passes last year.

When the bullets start flying for real in the regular season, is when you will see the difference in knowledge & fundamentals when it comes to a rookie QB coming out of college spread offense & one coming out of a college pro style.

Hell, I was hoping for Bryce Petty over Garrett Grayson in the draft because of Petty's physical tools but the reality is, college spread guys are not taught the nuances at the college level it takes to be a successful QB right away in the NFL. This is what teams have to deal with from these young spread QB's.

quote:

Petty completed just 10 of 18 pass attempts for 50 yards. He completed nothing over 10 yards in the air, attempting only three such passes, and looked very uncomfortable at times.

The Baylor offense is far from NFL-friendly, relying on spread concepts and wide-open single-covered receivers down the field all day long. In an NFL offense, with a little more nuance to it, Petty looked in over his head for much of the game.

The physical tools were clearly all there, but the adjustment period for him is going to be significant. There was even one play where he either forgot he was supposed to be under center, or (a more concerning possibility) simply didn’t know and had to be physically shoved into the correct position by veteran running back Bilal Powell.

LINK

I figured with Brees having a few seasons left, there would be time to prep Petty & get him prepared during that time. Mariota is in that same boat with me. I like his skill set but feeding him to the wolves this early in his career could very well end up being a mistake by the Titans.

Also, I don't care how good the Jets might be defensively, they will be up shite Creek without a paddle if Petty has to start for any significant stretch during this season.

Here's a Winston vs Mariota breakdown of their preseason openers by NFL Network.

Most people liked Petty over Grayson b/c of his physical tools. If you watch the college tape...Grayson is easily the better QB. He has 2 or 3 inches on Brees and his arm is easily good enough to get the job done. There's a reason Petty slipped in the draft.

It's a legit reference to him, and I've had similar ideas about his football acumen. As for any of these young hipster doughboys that don't know about Alvin Mack, I say kill em all, let the paramedics sort em out.

The Bucs won't be near as bad as you think. Possibly could compete for the division with the latest injury to KB.

But to answer the question I think the Redskins will be pretty bad, Tennessee also might suck until Marcus gets benched.

NYJ with or without Geno this team would have sucked. The rest of their division keeps getting better top to bottom with the Jets being the only exception.

CAR screwed themselves by winning the division last year. They had a losing record and drafted among some of the most established teams from a season ago. Other teams with similar records drafted in the top half of each round. Losing about 1/2 of their passing game in an offense without threats to begin with will not help matters at all.

HOU It is rare to move on from Matt Schuab as your starter and not upgrade the most pivotal position on your team. Houston found a way to do just that with Hoyer. Meanwhile The rest of the division either has Andrew Luck or a young top draft pick at QB to pin their hopes on and would appear to be in a better position to build for the future. However Houston is "trying" to win now.

My prediction is that all 3 of these teams have a pick somewhere in the top 8 when their season abruptly ends.

He was pretty bad. Way off target... Pic...fumble and a TD. Mainly he had accuracy issues.

We got the better QB. Grayson's accuracy and his college head coach is what separates him from Bryce Petty.

Any QB who can not play under center in College is probably not NFL ready.
