Mosley
Matthews
Cooks
Verrett
Fuller
Ford
Lee
Hageman

If Mosley is there he is my pick.

If not, I would be willing to reach for Matthews or settle for Cooks.

Mosley (we need a great ILB desperately)
Fuller (still need CB)
Ealy (Not a need, but would fit perfectly in the 3-4/4-3 changeups we do)
Nix
Verrett
Roby
Benjamin
Ford

I am amending my list.

Looking 12 months out at the position, we can literally have only Rufus Johnson on the roster.
Definitely.

Depending on who you classify as an OLB and what scheme we use, Humber Haralson, and Dawson are on 1 year contracts, Butler is on his last year, and IF you count Galette(I don't) he can void his contract if he hits 12 sacks(but only has 1 year left after this one anyway).

That would leave Lofton, Hawthorne, Reddick, Knox, and Johnson as our LBs next year. And Lofton($9m, save $4m if cut) and Hawthorne($6m, save $3m if cut) are both over priced next year.

So ILB, OLB, whatever, we need at least one more legit LB, maybe 2.

I see that you're an LSU fan, so clearly this is pointless

Pointless to mention too. I've never advocated drafting LSU players for the sake of getting LSU players on the Saints.

quote:

Cooks doubled OBJ's production last season

Cooks was also the unquestioned #1 receiver on a team that is pass-oriented. Beckham shared his passes in a more run-oriented offense with Landry. For example, Oregon State attempted 625 passes last year while LSU attempted 326. I would hope Cooks had better numbers.

With another quality WR in Landry, the Tigers didn't focus their passing game on Beckham. That''s evidenced by the mere 18 reception difference between Landry (77 catches) and Beckham (59 catches). Conversely, there was a 70 catch gap between Cooks (128 catches) vs. Richard Mullaney (52 catches).

Beckham also has more experience returning punts and kick-offs which is another area the Saints could use improvement/competition.

Also, college awards are not a good measuring stick in choosing which player should be drafted. I can point out several Biletnikoff winners whose careers will illustrate that point.

Tl.dr - I'd rather have a taller, heavier WR who made more downfield catches and has experience retuning punts and kicks. I'd like to think his size would help him block since the Saints are supposedly moving toward a more run-based offense this season.

BTW here's something that might be interesting to read:

Search "Biletnikoff award" and take a look at the names he's in the company of. Then have a seat.

In the last 10 years:

Calvin Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Michael Crabtree

are the only 3 notable names that have produced 1k+ seasons. The rest are either out the league, coming into the league (lee/cooks), or #2 receivers at best (minus blackmon).

Yards in college don't mean they'll produce even the same in the NFL. Terrance Williams had a 1832 yard season in college. He had 700 yards in the NFL. Nuke Hopkins had 1400 yards that same college season, last year he had 800 yards. What's that supposed to mean!?!?!? Oh wait, some players translate better even if their college production was high.

It does seem like there are more less successful Biletnikoff winners.

I remember another 5'9"-5'10" ~185lb WR who had an even better season than Cooks and won the Biletnikoff award. His name was Troy Edwards (1998 winner) and he had a 7 season career and started a quarter of his games.

I can also name a more recent Biletnikoff winner from Oregon State who has 2 games to his name and no NFL stats. That person is Mike Hass.

Awards can mean something but they can also be gained through a team using a pass happy offense. That's not to say Edwards, Hass or even Cooks isn't incredibly talented. But it does show that it can produce muddled picture between the system and the player and shouldn't be used as a comparison tool for the most part.
