I agree 100% He could help us out tremendously if he were to fall to us in round 2

While these moves were shocking, I don't think Payton had a choice. To do nothing would be to tell the players that there are no consequences for not doing your job. These have been season long issues. Hartley was shanking extra points that would have missed if they were 5 yards back. Just sloppy.

I have a feeling he's going to get beat a few times, but incredible for the running game

True. Probably his best game as a professional, but he's been spotty all year.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen Armstead even as an extra blocker but now all of a sudden, he's thrown right in there.

I mean I get why he's in there, don't get me wrong.

but I thought they would have broken him in a little more.

weren't there times when Brown would be used as an extra blocker? Sure he started some games in 2011 and 2012 but I could have sworn he played in other spot duty on the O-line.

Brown was used as an extra blocker, but I remember him sucking at it.

Look at it this way: if you're working the game as an extra blocker, then that's less reps you're taking as a LT for the scout team in practice.

This makes me really nervous.

Honestly, if Armstead was better he would have been playing before now. I think SP may be banking on his potential in a live game environment. Prior to what we've said, it CAN get worse than Brown has been (he has been DECENT half of the time.. Never good, but not 100% always awful) and going from Arkansas Pine-Bluff's opponents to Carolina's front 7 is a big jump.

I hope CSP has sat Brown down and said look bud, you may get another shot.. If you do, don't blow it. If Armstead starts getting owned, maybe brown could come in and play a little better to save the game for us.

We'll see. Fingers crossed that TA looks good.

I know in the media Drew and SP are going to be somewhat politically correct, but I wonder if "behind the scenes" Drew's like "WTF?!?!? Coach, can you get that no blocking m'fer out of there??? I'm getting my arse killed!" Or if behind closed doors Drew is saying yeah, he needs not to start. Don't get me wrong, I know SP doesn't need that to make a decision...he see's the game and game film, but I just wonder if Drew puts his 2 cents in...even if negative towards another player.

They did say in the nola.com article that Drew HUNG UP on the press conference call (or was mysteriously "disconnected") halfway through his answer of the Charles Brown question. Make of that what you will. "Hold on, I'm in a car and I'm going into a tunnel, can't hear you, I'll have to call you back!" CLICK

I agree and I'm glad this is happening. I love that Payton isn't dealing with losing anymore and he makes the changes. However I remember in the pre-season, Armstead being absolutely demolished in the run game. I mean he couldn't get any push to save his life. But, the coaches know way more than I so here's hoping.

I think Payton is just reluctant about playing inexperienced OL and putting Brees at risk. Kreutz was pathetic while here and it took until, what, week 6 before he put DLP in.

Disagree with this.

Agree with this.

Payton's not just gonna yank Brown out because he actually has been pretty good in some games. He made Peppers a non-factor up in Chicago and has done well in some other games. But his inconsistency was going to get Brees killed. I don't think it's a knock on Armstead at all. We took him knowing he would need a little bit of grooming. I think this is great honestly. Payton saw him as the future of the position and is giving him a chance, albeit a little early, to impress and take over the job.

I think Brown's biggest problem is mental. If he's having a good game, he's fine. If he makes a mistake, he's lost. Dude has all the physical skills one would need to be a good LT. Something is not right with the guy for SP to make this change right now in the most important game of the season, thus far.
