I'm lukewarm to this idea. I mean, they are sitting in a must win for the #2 seed and make a huge change like this and Hartley. I trust in SP, but my fandom isn't stopping me from worrying.
If all of our talent options are near equal whether it be play terron at LT, or move Strief to LT where he's not comfortable, playing Bryce somewhere where he's not comfortable or a guarnatee.... Terron has the most potential and we need to find out if he's ready to be our LT for next year. Time to put on your big boy pants and go to work.

Tough matchup with Charles Johnson, though. I was waiting for the move, but Brown (and Strief) actually played great against Carolina.

glad brown is headed to the bench, but very nervous about the replacement

you get drafted to play the game. this guy should be eager to step in and show us why we drafted him.
and im sure they will put in packages to give him extra support.

I know in the media Drew and SP are going to be somewhat politically correct, but I wonder if "behind the scenes" Drew's like "WTF?!?!? Coach, can you get that no blocking m'fer out of there??? I'm getting my arse killed!" Or if behind closed doors Drew is saying yeah, he needs not to start.
Don't get me wrong, I know SP doesn't need that to make a decision...he see's the game and game film, but I just wonder if Drew puts his 2 cents in...even if negative towards another player.

The guy is a physical freak, which may allow him to make up for some missteps. It seemed to me that Brown never got strong enough for the position. This could be potentially good for our running game.

They will put Graham over there to chip since he is such a beast at blocking.

I'm pretty confident that Drew has the confidence in Coach to let him do his job.

there is another TE on the team.
eta: time to move someone into the strief role of "64 is eligible"

Well, it would help in Drew not staring him down from the snap and the defense knowing exactly what they are doing.

I agree 100%. Payton must realize that Brown at LT will not allow us to win a championship. I think it's a gamble, but I like it. Let's find out what the kid is made of....he'll get a huge test against a stout d-line on the road.
Can he be worse than Brown? I hope not, but if so, there's no doubt LT will be our #1 priority in the offseason.

Was armstead a better pass blocker or run blocker coming out of college?

quote:I'm sure there have been benchings for fumbles, etc of skill players, it's just not as noticeable the way Payton rotates personnel. For instance, how many times did you see mike bell in the Super Bowl after he slipped?
has Payton ever benched a guy in the middle of a game like he did with Brown???

Reminder of what we drafted:
quote:
Armstead wasn't only a very good football player in high school, but he was also a key part of a record-setting championship track and field team. In his senior year of high school, Armstead led the team with a toss of 62 feet, 3 inches in the shot put. Armstead received several Division I football scholarship offers coming out of high school, but elected to attend Arkansas-Pine Bluff because his coach, former Redskins linebacker Monte Coleman, was the only one that would allow him to also participate in track and field. Armstead not only managed to be a three-time All-SWAC football player, but also an eight-time SWAC champ in track and field.
Over his career for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Armstead has played in 37 games. He started all 12 games at left tackle in his senior season. Armstead really made a name for himself at the East-West Shrine Game, where he performed extremely well. His play was so promising that he was called to play in the Senior Bowl as an injury replacement for Dallas Thomas.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Armstead is a fantastic athlete for the position. He is light on his feet in pass protection, and nimble when on the move. Agile, moves well in space, shows the quickness to get to the second level and cut off linebackers. Has been asked to pull all the way across the line and has shown effectiveness in doing so. Bends and redirects well. Extends his arms to keep pass rushers at bay. Not overwhelmed by defensive twists and stunts. Does a good job of selling play fakes, draws, and screens.
WEAKNESSES
Needs to improve lower body strength. Can get bull rushed back. Faced sub-par competition. Needs to speed up hands, and be more consistent with his aiming point. Gets to the second level quickly, but will struggle to locate his target, gets lost in space. Will lunge at defenders with his head down in the run game.
NFL COMPARISON Duane Brown
BOTTOM LINE
Armstead has been a fast riser in the postseason process. He's got an intriguing athletic skill set. Despite facing sub-par competition in season, he's shown the ability to be a good pass protector, and contribute as a run blocker. He can likely stay outside, although some teams might see him as a guard. He could find himself as a Day 2 pick before all is said and done.

He was a highly regarded prep prospect but elected to sign with Arkansas Pine-Bluff because it was the only university willing to allow him to compete in both football and track.
quote:
STRENGTHS:
Remarkable athlete. Lines up at left tackle but has the athleticism to consider as a tackle-eligible pass-catcher. Good burst off the snap and accelerates quickly, making him an ideal fit in a zone-blocking offense which requires blocking on the move and releasing to the second level. Flashes great explosiveness with a powerful initial pop to the defender. Good balance. Plays on the balls of his feet and his knees bent, showing the ability to adjust to oncoming pass rushers and mirroring them throughout the play. Very intelligent. An Industrial Technology (IT) major who will graduate this summer.
WEAKNESSES:
A better athlete than football player, at this time. Possesses excellent speed but too often gets to the second level only to lose sight of his target. Provides an explosive pop but needs to improve his upper body and hand strength to latch on and sustain his blocks. Does not do a good enough job of finishing blocks at the SWAC level. Struggled a bit anchoring against powerful rushers at the East-West and Senior Bowl. Possesses obvious upside but might need a year in the weight room to compete at the NFL level.
Compares to: Joe Staley, OT, San Francisco 49ers -- Savvy scouts had been watching Staley dominate the MAC for years but he didn't really begin earning national attention until a strong effort at the Senior Bowl and dazzling workout at the 2007 Combine. Should Armstead commit to the game with the intensity that Staley has, he too could wind up emerging as an upper-echelon blindside tackle in the NFL.

Time to see what we've got there. There is going to be some major changes on the OL next year. He's going to need to show something.

Saints rookie LT Terron Armstead is 6'5/306 and ran an o-lineman record 4.71 at the Combine. Keenan Allen also ran a 4.71.

Dude could be a beast on screens.

Our pass heavy offense should play up to his strengths and hide some of his weaknesses. Very interested to see him in action. Hopefully he is ready to take the position.
