anyone on the Bruce Ellington train or in the Jalen Saunders camp?

or is adding another big WR a must.

I like Cooks but I don't know if he makes to the Saints pick in the 1st round.

Well, we lost Reggie & went & got Sproles. That seemed pretty calculated to me.

He's always liked these guys to stretch the field horizontally.

Look at the YPC. That is a lot more telling that he has been losing a step.

Also his receiving TDs tanked from 7 in each of the first 2 years to 2 this past year in large part because the option route underneath at the goal line wasn't unstoppable like it used to be.

Not to mention both his return avgs. dropping each year.

Not saying he's going to be bad. He did have 70+ catches each year here. But he will never live up to his over hyped 2011 year and he's only going to get slower.

We trimmed room for Ingram and Robinson(I expect PT to get only 50-75 carries this year unless he is rolling), and so we can get more vertical in the passing game.

I know I damn sure would rather Sproles' 50 carries to go to Robinson instead. And I'd rather a receiver averaging 15 yards per catch with 70 catches than Sproles' 8.something.

Whether we get someone young to replace his role or just replace his touches with younger guys, it doesn't matter. We are moving on and it was time. Sproles became far too one dimensional as an underneath pass catcher.

Well, Reggie was the 2nd overall pick in the draft that unexpectedly fell to us. Nothing calculated about that. Darren happened to be a FA at the same time that Mark Ingram and Reggie's big contract made us trade the guy away. It's how things lined up.

Exactly right.

We were fully expecting to take Mario Williams. When Reggie "fell" SP simply took the BPA.

Sproles was good fortune that he was a FA at the same time Reggie was bitching about his role on his final year. It was obvious he was going to bolt in FA the next year if we didn't trade him that year.

Being buddies with Sproles, Brees said hey man come play for us and boom there ya go.

It wasn't a plan to have either of those guys. And if we were dead set on having that type, we would have found a way to sign McCluster.

Signing Sproles after we traded Bush was pretty calculated to me. Drafting Bush may not have been, but Bush developed the position in our offense as it stands today.

I mean Sproles averaged 77 catches per year over the last 3.

Bush averaged about 60, but missed a ton of games. He averaged 5 catches per game, which would put him at about 80 per year over 16 games.

So you're talking 8yrs of having a heavily targeted RB, in a high powered offense. Something's working. Will it change? possibly. But it has proven to be successful.

I like Jalen Saunders a lot. Could be contributor w/ a late round pick.

It seems like the only two players, in that mold, this board knows or talks about is Dri Archer & D Thomas.

this isn't directed at anyone in particular in this thread, but this is my opinion on sproles/screens:

while his numbers and production decreased last year, I don't think that is necessarily an indication of his ability being on the decline.. I noticed last year that the play calling was very average and too predictable... when you have an average joe like myself correctly predicting that the next play called is more than likely going to be a screen, I would imagine that professionals know it's coming too

I think that sproles' production or lack thereof last year was a direct result of our plays being too predictable

just my two cents though, had to break the first post ice somehow... go easy on me

i was thinking them because as mentioned earlier in the thread, what if the RB's aren't as involved in the passing game?

we've already got some big pass catchers like Jimmy, Colston, and Toon... I mean I guess so with Toon. But he needs to step up and work through what ever it is that has kept him from making an impact.

Stills isn't all that small, he's around 6'0'' right? has plenty of speed.

I thought about Saunders because of Stills. I mean when the Saints were scouting Stills I'm sure they may have noticed Saunders on the tape too because they both played at OU?

I like Ellington's play making ability. He might not be that quick twitch player but I like his acceleration. Ellington is also an alright basketball player too. Definitely an above average athlete.

either of these guys would be a helluva complement to the WR's we have in my opinion.

Welcome to Saints Talk, by the way.

I've seen this argument before; and while I agree that the playcalling was much too predictable at times, I think Sproles did slow down.
He just didn't have as much burst, and I rarely saw him outrunning defenders like he used to.
He always got caught.
And his return game was just crap.

I think he is definitely slowing down, and it's just biology.

I'm glad the Eagles wasted the money on him, he's declining.

in 2011 he was so damn good, I held my breath every time he touched the ball, but the last two years its like he's carrying an extra Sproles with him when he runs.

I think we go back to more of the 09 offense. Still scoring a lot but recognizing we have a legit D. Run the ball 20-25 times a game and let Drew throw it only 30.

Morestead did.

Different return; but still, I'm right.
