in regards to the pass rusher people wanted in the later rounds, PFF summed it up nicely

quote:

Pass-rushers outside of the first round don’t tend to have a good track record in the NFL. Usually edge players with NFL athleticism don’t make it out of the first two rounds, but in Hendrickson’s case he might have to wait until Day 3 of the draft. That’s because he’s a good, not great, athlete with almost zero experience against tackles with NFL futures. He of all players in this class could be the rare boon late in the edge class.

Got it.

I see it as: Jordan elite, Fairley decent, Rankins unknown

This was obviously written before the draft; they were littered all throughout the second-3rd round. Hendrickson was the last of them to go. Taking a second guy would have upped our odds on hitting on one.

btw 6 of the top 10 sack guys from last year were picked outside of the 1st round

Yeah this draft in particular was a different beast because of the depth. Edge rushers in this draft were similar to WRs in the 2014 draft.

what do you think brod, are you happy only coming away with Hendrickson in the draft as far as edge rushers?

I would have liked to have seen a pass rusher taken higher but we've seen Payton make the formula we are looking at for 2017 work before. We are currently more set up to have a 2009 or 2011 in terms of the run game & controlling pace & tempo. The offense will be able to throw or run at will according to what an opposing defense is looking to take away. The Ram & Kamara selections may not be sexy but they provide an aspect that had been missing. The Marcus Williams pick is a wild card. I see a bit of Sharper in his game. Now, he won't come in with the veteran savy that Sharper did but his ball skills are undeniable.

I like the draft but Analzone mehhhhh. I'm far from one of "those" LSU fans but I like Beckwith more there

I was a little skeptical of the selection at first as well, but from everything I've read and watched.......his upside and athleticism is greater than that of Beckwith. I have always been a Beckwith fan, but he has injury concerns now as well. So you might as well go with the higher upside prospect. I have also read that he is a possible rush option as well (in a blitz package)

Agree with this, but will Sean Payton playcall that way?

I feel that there's a big misconception about teams that run being teams that win.

Instead it's teams that are winning run the ball. Once you get that two td lead in the second half you start running the ball more to shorten the game. But if that isn't the case you stick to what works for your team.

For most teams in the league today running is not what wins them games. Very few teams have the line and backs that they can pound you all game.

But looking at what we built I think we can grind more than the recent past, and hopefully we also have those multi score leads late so we can run clock.

I think rankins and fairley can be really good and cam is 100% elite

Yeah Fairley had 6.5 sacks and Rankins had 4 in just 9 games. That's very good pass rush from the interior.

I think Rankins if he plays in 16 could get to 8-9 sacks in year 2. The coaches talked about how far he was behind because of the injury.

I'm usually a sunshine pumper. Thing is though, if the Saints can't make the playoffs this year, it has nothing to do with the talent anymore. This will be a plenty talented roster (offensively and defensively) with a HOF QB. If they have another losing season they need blow it up and start over (No Drew, No Sean).

Definitely. His run defense definitely needs work, but his pass rushing ability is definitely legit. I think he can at least pass Fairley's 6.5 from last year.

I think really knowledgeable fans know this.

Right. Pass to score, then run to win. I'm tired of seeing us pass on 3rd and 2, or throw three straight passes when we need to work clock.

Excellent post....
I'm extremely optimistic!
Best draft a FA in a long time.
I'm even feeling better about our last few picks!

, i think the overall philosophy is to rely on the running game more to help our defense out.

I mean I hear you and the moves we've made suggest that (Peterson) and even Kamara to some extent but he seems like he'll be used more as a pass catcher/gadget player.

but pretty much every year we throw a ton. Even when there has more balance between run and pass the passing stats are still freaking sick.

I think now with upgrades in the backfield we'll just spread the ball around more. Can't wait.. it should be awesome to watch.

quote:

we also signed Okafor who should be a solid starter and may get back up to the 8-sack range (Which he has done before. he's only like 26 so he's not an old man or anything).

he's the only LB I'm looking forward to watching besides Ellerbe (when healthy) and Robertson. Robertson is better in pass coverage and hopefully he can get back to more of that role this year. He isn't good at stopping the run (at least from bits and pieces I can remember from last year).

We have to start getting more contributions from our LB's I feel like for the D to for real improve. Just my opinion.

Okafor isn't playing LB for us. He'll be a rush end like Kikaha and Gwachum.

In 2009 we had Grant and Will Smith. Grant averaged 4 sacks a year opposite Smith since Payton was here. Everyone screaming for a DE doesnt realize that if a QB gets rid of the ball quickly, then DEs dont matter at that point. What matters is that you have guys that can cover.

We are building a secondary similar to what we had in 2009. Take the ball away. We dont need 40 sacks. We need turnovers. Im not saying these guys will cover for 8 seconds, but if the QB is looking for a target, and cant find one in 3-5 seconds, eventually he will see some pressure.

Our CBs were probably the weakest in the NFL last year due to injury along with LBs. We need another Vilma type which is why they went after athletic, high IQ guys. We need smart players. Anthony is probably on his way out but maybe Nolan gets something out of him. Analzone if healthy can play Will to start, Klein in the middle, and Robertson in the Sam.

This isnt going to be anything close to the defense we have been seeing barring a ton of injuries. They should finally get some rest on the sideline also since we beefed up the OLine, and added AD and Kamara. Keep the opposing offense off the field and hopefully score first to keep them in catchup mode. When they forced to make plays they will make mistakes and we will capitalize on that.
