Most likely team to trade back with?

The Pittsburgh Steelers but it will heavily depend on whether or not a QB they covet is still on the board as the 11th pick comes up. Ben Roethlisberger appears to be returning for 2017 but if he was seriously contemplating retirement after this past season, the threat will now be there after every season until he finally does hang it up for good.

quote:

The Steelers do not expect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to retire this year, as he mused about doing at the end of the postseason, but they do expect to make plans to be without Roethlisberger some day.

Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said today that he believes Roethlisberger is the Steelers’ starter for 2017 but also believes the franchise needs to know what it will do at quarterback once Big Ben is gone.

“You should have a successful quarterback plan in place,” Colbert said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

That plan may include keeping backup quarterback Landry Jones for years to come. Although Jones becomes a free agent next month, Colbert confirmed that the Steelers will try to re-sign him. Colbert also said the Steelers will add a quarterback, although he appeared to be referring more to a long-term future project than someone they’d expect to play in 2017.

“We’d like to have Landry stay in the mix,” Colbert said. “Will we add a guy? Absolutely. When? It’s hard to say. Sooner or later we will have to address that.”

Given the way Roethlisberger has talked about his future, it could be sooner rather than later. But it probably won’t be this year.

The question becomes would the acquisition of additional picks be worth falling back to pick #30?

Didn't Loomis say something a year or two ago about him not believing in trading back or something like that? I could be wrong but I thought I read something along those lines.

He might want to consult the Patriots about that. Maybe he should consider adopting their draft strategy.

Shop that pick and get Cleveland to bite. We move down one spot, they take their QB, and we pick up an extra pick or two.

Trading up is almost always a retarded move. That's why Bill Bellichick and New England trade back all the time instead and accumulate picks. It's all guesswork anyway. Scouting is NOT an exact science. The more guesses you have, the more likely you are to strike gold.

Plus, when guys are drafted later, you don't have to pay them as much. You can keep replenishing the talent on your team for cheap.
There is only one New England Patriots.

Trying to suggest a team model itself after anything they do, and you'll fail every time.

The Patriots violate all conventional wisdom and succeed anyway. We aren't and won't ever be the Patriots.

The Patriots find specific players to fit their system, no matter their talent level, coach up the rest, and compete for and often win Super Bowls. They trade down because they know that quantity matters more to them. A lot of their picks actually don't pan out.

The Saints target specific players and go up to get the good ones. Or the ones we believe are good.

We've done it every single year, except the bounty year, since 2007.

If we trade down, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Every year Saints fans want to trade back and get extra picks. And every year Loomis either stays still or moves up.

Are there two bigger wastes of pre-draft time and speculation for Saints fans than "will we trade back?" or "which LSU player will we draft?". Don't think so, personally.

This team lacks depth but it also lacks impact players on the defensive side of the ball. The last two years should have been opportunities to build the team depth, but it did not happen.

I agree about the lack of impact players on the defensive side of the ball(starting OG as well), but I actually like our depth as a whole. The 2016 offseason was pretty productive in building depth on this team. The 2017 roster will blow away any roster of ours from 2014-2016.

Of course a lot of their picks don't pan out. Lots of players in every round of the draft don't pan out. That's why the Patriots trade back. They know that quantity is better than quality in the draft, because the scouting is not that accurate. If the scouting was more accurate, then I would say go ahead and trade up to get the player you want. It's all guesswork unfortunately. All you can do is try to make the most informed guess that you can. NOBODY is truly a surefire, can't miss prospect.

Seattle used a similar strategy to New England to build their Super Bowl teams a few years ago. That strategy also prevents you from having to overpay for guys.

I said at the end of the season that getting one pick ahead of Cleveland and having Watson on the board would be a dream scenario for the Saints.

As soon as pick 10 goes in the Saints need to at least pick up the phone and act as if there is opportunity.

Believe me Cleveland wants this QB.

They are not going to risk losing him.

As far as Pittsburgh is concerned I would hate to drop that low to pick 30 unless Pittsburgh threw in a player like a guard.

The many spots is worth a late 1st round pick next year. Pittsburgh could even do a Ricky Williams type trade and it would not be enough.
