Colston had the want and Brees like work ethic. Thats why he was such a shock relative to his draft position.

Not really.

The way you stated what I quoted made it sound like Brees could take anyone and make them great(because that's what you did say).

No. You were trying pick out a minuscule detail and be an argumentative message board guy as usual.

We were obviously discussing this year's draft in regards to WR talent. Not Toon or Arrington or Mike Haas or whoever else you want to bring up.

quote:

The receiver has to be skilled. Not everyone mocked in the 1st and 2nd have great skills. Some of these guys are just physical freaks with "upside".

Ok I think this is where I am supposed argue an arbitrary quality such as "skill" with you

I think I would say something along the lines of all of the mocked WRs in the first 2 rounds are "skilled" enough to go for ~1k yards and multiple TDs in college. Then you would probably say Kelvin Benjamin is just a big body or Cooks is just a speed guy or Matthews has great hands yada yada yada and we would argue for 5 pages.

Whatever your stance is, you're right. So save it

quote:

On Toon, yeah I said he can turn it around. Just pointing out that despite all the physical talent, Brees still couldn't make him look good last year.

He's slow, has chronic ankle problems, and cannot catch. The first 2 we can deal with, but if he cannot catch Brees cannot help him. If he makes the two big catches against the Jets and we win that game, maybe his season goes in a different direction. Either way there are a handful of rookie WRs who even contribute in year 1. I'll reserve judgment until after this year.

Now back to discussing the draft and the prospects in the thread (remember you won this argument, no need to elaborate on anything)

I think if Moncrief has a QB that can put the ball on him he will be special

Which is why Matthews is so underrated. His QB wasn't great either, but he produced a hell of a lot better than Moncreif. I would definenetly take Matthews with the 27th pick.

I like Matthews, too.

He obviously has the skill and athleticism to succeed. He was a great basketball player in HS as well.

Not to mention he was in the National Honor Society and got into Vandy (smart), cousins with Jerry Rice (genes!!), and does the whole community service/mission trip thing (good values).

No I was specifically pointing to that fact that not just anyone can roll in here and be a stud. I could have mentioned Meachem who, while having a decent career, wouldn't be picked in the top 2 rounds with a do over.

There's no guarantee a 1st or 2nd round guy will become great just because Brees is throwing to him. Better than otherwise maybe.

Not trying to argue, just point out that just because we get someone early doesn't mean he'll go gang busters.

And Toon is not slow. He's actually one of the faster receivers we have. I believe his 40 was comparable to Stills (may be wrong) and he definitely was able to beat a few corners deep last year.

All of the rest I don't even care to talk about.

far from slow. he got behind defenders when he played. He just couldn't haul it in on a couple. I remember he dove and it popped out. Another one was the botched catch that led to an INT iirc

He's "Colston slow". They don't have that initial burst but they can get going 20+ yards into their route. 4.5 guys

ETA: ^^^ this isn't necessarily a knock

Lester Earl thinks you are highly underrating Matthews.

I don't think Toon is even close to as bad as many on here think. He's still young and I think he still has the potential to pull it together and be a good player.

I agree which is why I qualified what I said with the potential of him doing better.

I'm hoping he's more like Galette and less like Wilson.
