I'd be surprised if we drafted a QB this year. We have the chance to beef up our front 7, solidify our OLine, and get a #3 WR. We don't need a QB this year.

I agree we don't need a QB but Petty is very good and I think underrated and a little lost in the shuffle of Winson, Mariota and Hundley. I think two behind Bree's and he could be the best QB in this class. If you can get the best QB in any given year in the 3rd round you take him.

From what i read Petty is moving up the draft board an i do not think he will be there at pick 75th an may not be there at 44th pick so if they like him may have to use the 31st pick to get him.

There's no way they pick him with #31 (will be seen by Brees as an insult and may divide the team).

I agree with your post but here's a quote from Brees just from a few days ago.

quote:

Brees himself weighed in Friday on how he'll react if the Saints draft a QB this year, saying that's "their prerogative" but he'd be unfazed by the competition.

It is due diligence as well. Say you scout him, think he's "okay", but another team is VERY infatuated with him in the late 1st or even at our 2nd round pick, you have the option of dangling that pick for ransom. Of course that is if you think he's "okay"....

Since 2011, this is how many QB's have been drafted top 2 rounds:
2011: 6 total: Cam Newton (1), Jake Locker (8), Blaine Gabbert (10), Christian Ponder (12), Andy Dalton (35), Colin Kaepernick (36)
2012: 5 total: Andrew Luck (1), RG3 (2), Ryan Tannehill (8), Brandon Weeden (22), Brock Osweiler (57)
2013: 2 total: EJ Manuel (16), Geno Smith (39)
2014: 5 total: Blake Bortles (3), Johnny Manziel (22), Teddy Bridgewater (32), Derek Carr (36), Jimmy Garoppolo (62)
4 year average: 4.5/yr

2006 and 2007 - 5 QBs picked (10 total)
2008 and 2009 - 4 QBs picked (8 total)
2010 - 3 QBs picked
5 year average: 4.2/yr

Don't forget about the 5th year option for 1st rounders too.

No

I'd rather take a gamble on next years QB class.

If we take a QB it will be the Oregon State guy in the fifth round. Brees has 3 to 5 years left, I can't see the Saints passing up on starters for a potential QB replacement years from now.

I guess I can see us going QB in the 5th round or later. We can't really afford to draft one before then.

No it isn't

Even if it's not great it's still a deeper class than this years crap.

Weird I know, but I don't consider him the future of the Saints since he is not a member of the team.
